They Wait

By the end of the movie, you'll realize why was this movie called They Wait. Aptly and precisely named.

I think the ang mohs are quite impressed with the Chinese culture. This movie is centered on the Hungry Ghost Month. So, you won't run away from ghosts, especially angry ghosts seeking for revenge, and of course, angry ghosts taking one human being as ransom in order to cause the other human beings to uncover the secret or whatsoever mystery behind their death or inexplicable disappearance. Sounds familiar, right? If you are a fan of Asian horror movies, you will know what I mean.

Nice try. But I just can't accept ang mohs appearing in Asian horror flicks. They look odd. However, the lead actress, Jaime King as Sarah the mother gave a pretty impressive performance amidst the all (almost) Asian crew. The other leading actors and actresses are Asians and they speak Cantonese plus English. If you accept the "fact" that ghosts of the Chinese origin from the 1940s could speak good, if not fluent, English, you may watch this movie. Haha!

Anyway, there are scary moments that will make you feel uneasy. And I really don't like the petrified and penetrative gaze of the she-ghost. Overall, it's an entertaining watch. Just don't piss off the ghosts. :P

Check out its synopsis here.

  1. Depends on where the ghosts are from. If from China, they could have been educated by the Chinese-speaking priests who went to China shortly before the communist lockdown.

Actually if they applied themselves, it's not that uncommon. Of course, if the ghost is from the lower class than a *bit* hard to believe, but if the ghost is from the upper middle class and above then them speaking fluent English is possible. :D

Whether they got the speaking style right is another story altogether, XD

  2. Hmmm... the ghosts are illegal immigrants from China. During a flash back scene, meaning the she-ghost was still alive, she spoke in English. -___-
