[Friday-29] Surrogates (2009)

How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?

I've watched Gamer, a movie set in the near-future whereby mind-control technology is considered humane by mankind, globally.

Now, I've watched Surrogates, a movie also set in the near-future whereby human beings choose to live in isolation, adamant about leaving and prefer to stay in the safety and comfort of their homes, even rooms.

Worse still, a human being interacts with another human being and operates their daily living and tasks through robotic bodies that serve as their "surrogates", which are designed as better-looking versions of themselves. It's claimed that a peaceful world free from fear, pain, and crime is achieved through "surrogacy".

The whole movie rolls on with
Agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) and Agent Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell) uncovering the plot and conspiracy surrounding "surrogacy". I'm indeed impressed with Bruce Willis' performance. He's one of the best actor ever!

In Surrogates, he played the character of a tough, almost invincible surrogate of himself and also the character of a vulnerable, helpless, and sentimental human being. Just by comparing the two characters on-screen is good enough to give me the creeps. Bruce Willis' performance is convincingly good and now I realize why I missed his movies so much! :D

This popped into my mind: Watching Surrogates actually made me think about how remarkable it is that mankind will still value humanity in the end despite all sorts of chaos. Undeniably, there are myriads of ways for us to run away from reality but in the end, we'll realize that what counts is our humanity.

In summary, you just have to watch Surrogates!

  1. I went to the screening last Monday.
Didn't really like the movie, although the ending was quite unexpected. =)

  2. Yeah, I believe most of us will... first, shocked when Agent Greer pressed [N]. Second, we thought all surrogates will be disconnected and billions of their operators dead.

    ;)
