There are four kinds of alien encounters. The fourth kind is abduction.So, it's clear that The Fourth Kind has something to do with extraterrestrial beings and abductions.
Actually, I don't quite buy the idea of alien encounters.
According to this mockumentary, a scale of measurement has been established for alien encounters.
* 1st kind: When a UFO is sighted
* 2nd kind: When evidence, e.g. radiation is collected
* 3rd kind: When contact is made with extraterrestrial beings
* 4th kind: Alien abduction
What's The Fourth Kind about? Psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich), based in Nome, a very remote town in Alaska begins videotaping her hypnosis sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly witnesses disturbing evidences of alien abduction.
Footage recordings of multiple terrified witnesses during their hypnosis sessions, including Dr. Tyler herself are part of the movie. However, their allegations of being visited or even abducted by extraterrestrial beings share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.
The idea of shooting it as a mockumentary is not something new. We've seen this shooting style in Cloverfield, REC, and District 9. To me, the idea of using alien abduction to explain the whole phenomenon is stale. Certain scenes in the movie depict demon possession so apt to such an extent I was wondering, doesn't demon possession make a better selling point?
Overall, a so-so movie. I won't recommend it unless you're really a fan of the theory of alien abduction.
