Movie: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

This is the first movie I watched in 2010 - "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", a captivating and imaginative fantasy tale of ethical choices in life, set in the present day.

Fantasies are never my cup of tea but I've reasons to watch this movie. Read on!

Note: No worries, I won't provide spoilers about its storyline. =)

Christopher Plummer who plays Dr Parnassus gives an impressive performance as a 1,000 year-old leader of a traveling troupe. He's ancient, immortal, and he's blessed with an extraordinary gift of recreating a visual world of others' imaginations. However, at the same time, he's cursed with a dark secret due to his bet with the devil, Mr Nick, a very long time ago.

So to say, the main focus of the movie is how Dr Parnassus fight to break the curse and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all. As simple as that.

I like this line of credits, shown at the end of the movie:
"A film from Heath Ledger and friends". In fact, I'm so delighted to see Heath Ledger as Tony in the movie and his friends - Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell - who were cast to replace Ledger for the same role in certain scenes due to Ledger's sudden death in 2008.

They're simply amazing!

Heath Ledger - Original Tony

Johnny Depp - Tony No. 2

Jude Law - Tony No. 3

Colin Farrell - Tony No. 4

Recommended. You may find this movie rather confusing at first, especially if you don't like to watch fantasies. Watching Heath Ledger is the main reason I can hang on till the movie ends. He's a legend.

  1. Hey... This is the 1st movie I've watched in 2010 too.

It was a toss-up between Cirque du Freak & Imaginarium. The movie is a great fantasy ride but I left with a "what-if" feeling should Heath had completed it.

Superb performance by all 3 "fill-ins" who gave the project a little magic of their own.

I'd highly recommend it for fantasy & Heath Ledger fans. However, for some folks may find the movie forgettable as like you said, it can be a bit confusing...
