Discovering & Taking Action

I attended a meetup about how to deal with procrastination and getting things done in our life on Friday.

The speaker, Uncle Patrick was right when he commented about this meetup being a way to help us discover our situation. Then it's up to us on how we want to act upon our discovery.

Pre-discovery stage

Currently, everything is fine and dandy in my life. I'm pretty safe and sound in my comfort zone while doing things within my skill sets and confidence level. However, there's a problem - procrastination in terms of starting and doing new things that I know will do me good but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Meetup

The meetup basically caused us to understand what is procrastination, why do we procrastinate and how can we deal with it. We're all guilty of being procrastinators in one way or another.

What is procrastination?

Procrastination is avoiding doing things that need to be done or leaving things undone for as long as possible.

Why do we procrastinate?

Three main reasons:

  • Fear of facing failures.
  • Perfectionist.
  • Waiting or hoping that things will turn out to be done on their own.

Post-discovery stage

We really need our butts kicked so that we will wake up and start to do the things that we need or want to do. There's this one quote from Uncle Patrick that I think is really true: "How you do anything is how you do everything."

So, what we need to do is not about reminding ourselves not to procrastinate. That doesn't help because you can keep on telling yourself a thousand times that you must not procrastinate but in the end, nothing still gets done.

One way to kick out butts is to attend meet-ups with like-minded people so that we can share our experiences and thoughts and receive feel-good, positive reinforcements that will help to spur us ahead in taking action to get things done.

So here's the gist of what I've discovered:

1. Re-visit my dreams.
2. Set goals and tasks to achieve my dreams.
3. Set timelines for each tasks needed to achieve my dreams.

The main thing is MAKE THE DECISION TO TAKE ACTION NOW!

I've a list of things that I want to do and dreams that I want to achieve. Now it's time to get into planning mode. ;)

  1. Yeah, Joyce. That's the way to go. Action speaks louder than words. A dream is just a dream when nothing is done about it. Move!

  2. Keep it up, Joyce! I have some positive changes too since the Friday meetup. :) Perhaps we should organise the second group therapy session, only this time we'll be unsupervised, to talk about what and how we have changed since the first meetup.

  3. Nicole, good to hear that we're improving. :D

I guess the next meet-up for our group would be on the 7th of May, the Genie one.

However, perhaps we all can meet earlier before the Genie discussion starts. I can ask David about this. Hehe.
