Movie: Looper (2012)

Hunted by your future. Haunted by your past.

Looper (2012) is a sci-fi crime thriller directed by Rian Johnson.

Synopsis: 2044, time travel has not yet been invented. 2074, criminal organizations are using illegal and banned time travel to send their enemies back into the past, where specialized assassins called "Loopers" await their arrival to kill them and eliminate any trace of the bodies. (Young) Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a Looper in the present day (2044). His world turns upside down after covering up for his colleague, Seth (Paul Dano) who failed to perform his duty. His future self, (Old) Joe (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time as his next 'assignment' but Young Joe hesitates and Old Joe escapes. His enraged boss Abe (Jeff Daniels) and Abe's desperate side-kick Kid Blue (Noah Segan) begin to hunt down both young and old Joes. Young Joe crosses path with Sara (Emily Blunt) and her young son Cid (Pierce Gagnon) while tracking down Old Joe. The truth starts to fall into place.

Time travel is not a new theme. In fact, most of us would have watched enough movies about time traveling and we might even have our own logical reasons to justify our favorite scenes/movies.

I think Looper is one of the most interesting time travel movies to date. Time traveling can be done both ways, i.e. from the past to the future and vice versa. So, I really like the way the scenes in Looper unfold as the story flows - what's happening in 2044, what happened in 2074, back to what's happening in 2044, so on and so forth - but you just couldn't seem to guess what's coming up next. You will be kept in suspense.

This is the kind of movie that makes you think, ask questions, and find out the rationale behind each scene, although we might confuse ourselves sometimes. At the same time, there are quite a substantial amount of brainless, enjoyable entertainment, i.e. adrenaline-pumping action and gunfight sequences. Not only so, there are certain scenes with Sara and Cid (Sara's young son) that are quite touchy and delicate. I think Cid steals the limelight the most. He really gives me the jitters every time he appears on screen with his dark, angry eyes and permanent scowl.

Well, I don't want to spoil the fun for you. Do watch this movie! You know you want it. :)
