Starting 2015 with stomach flu (gastroenteritis)

Source

2015 started off pretty tiring with the little one suffering from his first bout of stomach flu (gastroenteritis). The pediatrician diagnosed it as viral gastroenteritis. He got it from another toddler at the babysitter's house. GRRRR. He's teething and happily puts everything he sees on the floor into his mouth. I won't be surprised he has gotten infected by that toddler's toys or utensils. Double GRRRR.

He vomited buckets on the first two days. This was the first I saw him vomited. He breastfed - vomited - breastfed - vomited. He looked stunned as milk and water gushed out. I looked at him in shock, not sure should I bring him to the toilet or let him continue to vomit on the bed. Disaster!

Then, diarrhea kicked in. He had watery newborn poop again because he wouldn't eat anything else except breastmilk.

Today's the fourth day. He's taking Restore probiotics for the next two weeks. This is the one, prescribed by pediatrician. It's taken to help restore a healthy intestinal flora following this episode of stomach flu.

About his food, he has started taking a substantial amount of solids today. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children with gastroenteritis resume a normal diet (staying away from fatty foods) as soon as possible. That includes such staples as complex carbohydrates (whole-grain breads and cereals), lean meats, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables. [Source]

So far, his diet includes breastmilk, water, rice and soup, finely blended millet porridge, baby puffs, and baby cereal. I hope he gets well real soon.

Get well soon, baby!

On a happier note, I managed to cook some nice finger food for New Year dinner for hubby and myself. (Yeah, this happened a day before the flu monster attacked us.)

Veal chipolata wrapped in smoked streaky bacon.
Mini sausage and vegetables frittata.

Here's a nice steam-cooked soup for toddler. I named it Steam-cooked Chicken Thigh Soup (with carrot, goji berries, shiitake mushroom). I just measure all ingredients by hand, add water to cover, and steam-cook in my electric lunch box for 1.5 hours. No added salt or seasonings needed.

  1. Hi Joyce,
My girl was aged 2 had a very stomach flu that she had to hospitalised and on drip.
Your boy will be well soon.
Nice steam chicken soup you'd made. On my preference, I usually remove the chicken skin for less oily soup.
You take care yourself too as when kid is down, mommy is always having sleepless nights.

    1. Thanks Karen. He's getting better. Luckily not severely dehydrated because he's still breastfeeding. But yeah, sleepless nights.

  2. Hi Joyce,

Hope that your little one is feeling better now... We were the same 3 months back... Once one person is sick, the whole family will get the same disease too. Ai ya... we kissed too much :p

Good that you are cooking good food to help him to recover.

  3. Oh no, hope your little man is feeling better soon. I remember the first time my little guy vomited. He was distraught.
