Maybe We're Not Breaking Down; Maybe We're Just Waking Up

Lately, I've been having this newfound realisation.

Why is it that so many of the women I see starting things - whether it's coaching businesses, self-improvement pages, founding women empowerment community circles, podcasts - all are around the same age group?

40s. Early 50s. More or less the age where… well, perimenopause and menopause starts creeping in.

And honestly, I can't help but wonder: Are we doing all this because we're losing ourselves… or are we actually trying to find ourselves back?

Unexpected Crying Bouts That Just Hit You

Here's the unfiltered version.

At some points of the day, I cry, untriggered, for no clear reason.

I feel like I can't breathe properly. I feel overwhelmed out of nowhere. I overthink. I scroll through social media and suddenly feel like I've done nothing meaningful with my life, despite everything I've actually done.

Then I snap back into work mode, hit deadlines, reply to WhatsApp messages, and plan the next thing - reviewing social media posting captions, fixing a presentation deck, drafting new blog posts, whatever.

The Hormones Are Real, But So Is the Existential Earthquake

Yes, science says this is the season where oestrogen and progesterone go on a rollercoaster ride. That alone can mess with your mood, your sleep, your thoughts, even your memory.

But it's not just biology. It's identity.

It's like someone suddenly hit the pause button on life and asked:

"Eh, who are you, really?"

"What do you still want?"

"Have you been living life the way you wanted to, or just following the script?"

And wow, that's a hard pill to swallow when you realise you've been running on autopilot for years.

So What Do We Do?

We start something. Anything.

A podcast.

A side hustle.

A journaling habit.

A health journey.

A new hairstyle.

A blog post that sounds like this.

Not because we're lost.

But because we're trying to make sense of the new version of us that's starting to emerge.

It's not always graceful.

It's not always empowering.

Sometimes it's just crying in the dark bedroom after putting the kids to sleep, and Googling "is this a midlife crisis or am I just dramatic?"

Maybe It's Not a Breakdown. Maybe It's a Reboot.

No one talks about this enough.

This could be the stage where you're shedding who you used to be and slowly figuring out who you're becoming.

It can be confusing; but I gotta agree that it's also kind of magical.

And if you're feeling like this too - like something inside you is unravelling quietly even as the world sees you "having it all together"...

...just know you're not alone.

You're not weak. You're not unstable.

You're evolving.

We all are.

And Maybe This Is the Most Honest Thing I've Written in Awhile

So here's to the women who are tired and brave at the same time.

To the women crying quietly and still showing up.

To the women shedding old skins, not because they want to, but because they have to.

Here's to us. Midlife women. Not broken. Just breaking through.

Before I end, here are two songs I've had on repeat - gentle companions to this season of unravelling and rediscovering.

My Way (KATSEYE)

A soft reminder that even when the path feels shaky, you're still walking it your way; one brave, messy, beautiful step at a time.

In Another World (EJAE)

For the version of you you're still becoming. The one who's slowly surfacing through the tears, the chaos, and the quiet rebuild.

Thanks for reading and for holding space with me.

If you're in this season too, know that I see you.

And remember:

You're not "too emotional." You're not "too late." You're right on time for your next chapter. 🔥

Latest Family Favourite: Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack)

Thank you Netflix for this beautiful movie, "KPop Demon Hunters," with all its head-banging, jaw-dropping songs! My favourite song is the very inspirational "What It Sounds Like."

You need to watch the whole movie to understand the significance of "What It Sounds Like."

We broke into a million pieces, and we can't go back
But now we're seeing all the beauty in the broken glass
The scars are part of me, darkness and harmony
My voice without the lies, this is what it sounds like

Why did we cover up the colours stuck inside our head?
Get up and let the jagged edges meet the light instead
Show me what's underneath, I'll find your harmony
Fearless and undefined, this is what it sounds like

Have You Heard Netflix's Squid Game Season 2 Song, 'Dunggulgae Dunggulgae'?

Squid Game Season 2: Mingle Song

In Squid Game Season 2, the "Mingle" game features a hauntingly cheerful tune titled "Round and Round" (둥글게 둥글게), a traditional Korean children's song. This melody plays during the intense "Mingle" game rounds, where contestants must quickly form groups matching a randomly announced number, with those failing to do so facing immediate elimination.

The juxtaposition of this innocent nursery rhyme with the game's deadly stakes amplifies the psychological tension, a hallmark of the series' use of music to contrast innocence with brutality. The lyrics of "Round and Round" are lighthearted, encouraging children to dance and play together, which starkly contrasts the perilous situation of the players.

This strategic use of "Round and Round" in the "Mingle" game exemplifies the show's ability to intertwine elements of innocence with high-stakes drama, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

蘑菇濃湯 (Cream of Mushroom Soup) Children Song (Chinese)

The following super catchy Chinese children song is my youngest son's favorite song now! I love it too!

蘑菇濃湯 (Cream of Mushroom Soup) - Original Version

MOGU MOGU, hiding in the corner of the mart,
MOGU MOGU, come, let me take you home,
MOGU MOGU, into my lil' milk pot you go,
MOGU MOGU, making a bowl of soup.
Should I add a little bit more pepper?
Maybe a touch more parsley?
With love and care, I'll give it a stir,
Now I'll pick up my spoon and let's slurp, slurp, slurp – slurp up!
MOGU MOGU, soaking in my lil’ milk pot,
MOGU MOGU, sitting next to a carrot,
MOGU MOGU, let me tidy up my toys,
MOGU MOGU, serving a bowl of soup.
Should I add a little bit more pepper?
Maybe a touch more parsley?
With love and care, I'll give it a stir,
Now I'll pick up my spoon and let’s slurp, slurp, slurp – slurp it all up!

Disney's FROZEN Sing-A-Long at TGV Cinemas (4-28 December 2014)

This is an important public service announcement! :)

Do you remember Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf the Snowman, and Sven the Reindeer? Do you sing "Let It Go" all the time when you're in the shower? Yes, you do! At least, I do! Well, not the singing part. :P

Anyway, here's the important bit!

Disney's FROZEN Sing-A-Long will be screened in selected TGV Cinemas* from 4 till 28 December 2014!

What's a Sing-A-Long? It means you get to watch the movie and during the singing scenes, you get to sing out loud like how you do it in a karaoke room. Now, you get to sing with so many people in a huge cinema hall. You get to sing as loud as you want! The lyrics are shown on-screen and you don't need to memorize a single word! Don't be shy!

Now you tell me, don't you want to grab a ticket or two or more now?

* To watch Disney's FROZEN Sing-A-Long (only within the two weeks of 4-28 December 2014), buy your tickets at these TGV Cinemas - 1Utama, Sunway Pyramid, Wangsa Walk, Encorp Strand, Cheras Sentral, Bukit Indah, and Gurney Paragon.

******************************

I attended the Sing-A-Long's premiere session by TGV Cinemas yesterday. Guess what? It was AH-MA-ZING! More than 200 adults and their children (most little girls are dressed up as Elsa) were present! The pre-screening activities included photography sessions with the character Elsa, make-up demo, art & craft, etc.

Photography session with Elsa and young Elsa fans.
Photography session with Elsa and young Elsa fans.
The choir team sang "Let It Go" before premiere started.
Snowflakes!!!

We were "snowed" with snowflakes at one point of the sing-a-long. Oh my! The kids were squealing in delight!

Disclaimer: The photo above was taken with approval. Please DO NOT take photos in the cinema hall during movie time. :)

My toddler watched intently, humming and swaying along.

See the lyrics? A bouncing snowflake will be guiding you over the on-screen lyrics when it comes to the songs scenes. My favorite song? Definitely, "Let It Go"

Let it go.... let it go...

Disclaimer: The photo above was taken with approval. Please DO NOT take photos in the cinema hall during movie time. :)

******************************

Moms, dads, and fans! You can buy the tickets for RM12 from tgv.com.my or at TGV Cinemas located at 1Utama, Sunway Pyramid, Wangsa Walk, Encorp Strand, Cheras Sentral, Bukit Indah, and Gurney Paragon.

Current pursuit: Freedom & fire

~ Freedom ~

Freedom is not about doing what you like to do;
freedom is about not doing what you don't like to do.

~ Fire ~

Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys

Oh..... we got our feet on the ground
And we're burning it down
Oh..... got our head in the clouds
And we're not coming down

One day, I won't need to do what I don't like to do. Now, it's time to lay the foundation. Later, it's time to reap the fruits.

Wait and see. :)

Dumb Ways to Die

Dumb Ways to Die
(Tangerine Kitty)

Set fire to your hair
Poke a stick at a grizzly bear
Eat medicine that's out of date
Use your private parts as piranha bait

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die,
dumb ways to di-i-i-ie, so many dumb ways to die

Get your toast out with a fork
Do your own electrical work
Teach yourself how to fly
Eat a two week old unrefrigerated pie

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die,
dumb ways to di-i-i-ie, so many dumb ways to die

Invite a psycho-killer inside
Scratch a drug dealer's brand new ride
Take your helmet off in outer space
Use your clothes dryer as a hiding place

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die,
dumb ways to di-i-i-ie, so many dumb ways to die

Keep a rattlesnake as pet
Sell both your kidneys on the internet
Eat a tube of superglue
"I wonder what's this red button do?"

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die,
dumb ways to di-i-i-ie, so many dumb ways to die

Dress up like a moose during hunting season
Disturb a nest of wasps for no good reason
Stand on the edge of a train station platform
Drive around the boom gates at a level crossing
Run across the tracks between the platforms

They may not rhyme but they're quite possibly...
Dumbest ways to die
Dumbest ways to die
Dumbest ways to di-i-i-ie
So many dumb, so many dumb ways to die

"Be safe around trains. A message from Metro."

FORK's RockCappella at PJ Live Arts, the Rock Concert with great Finnish!

Last Saturday night, after "securing" our Oktoberfest 2012 limited edition 1L Tiger mug at Malones @ Jaya One, the hubby surprised me with two tickets to FORK's RockCappella at PJ Live Arts! :D

So unusual, they create a new genre!

More than a rock concert... this is a truly unique mix; up-to-the-fingernails-styled aesthetic and a visual musical experience. Or as VocalAustralia enthused when reviewing their sell-out concert at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, "their performance [is]... complete with brilliant comedic timing and choreography"!

This is a capella re-invented, world class entertainment, groundbreaking sounds, comic talent and extravagant fashion! Extremely well-known in Finland (find a Finn, any Finn, and ask them!!), the quartet (plus Grégory Maisse, their behind-the-scenes, fearless French audio wizard) is famous for their magnificent shows which fearlessly combine the various forms of stage art; music, theater, dance and light show which captures a humorous, yet elegant show experience. The group also throws in a good dose of love and self irony – leaving it up to the audience to work out exactly where the line between love and irony lives, and who's laughing at whom…

The rock concert with great Finnish!

The four singers in FORK all embody the stage presence of Rock Gods complete with brilliant comedic timing and energetic choreography.
Vocal Australia

World class singing. Groundbreaking sounds. Comic talent.
Extravagant fashion. No instruments.

Don't miss it...
Edinburgh Fringe Review

Flawless vocals, this daft show is by turns hilarious and breathtaking!

Project: Reflect 52 #40 - Betapa Hatiku

I enjoyed singing this hymn when I attended a mass this weekend.

For those who couldn't understand Bahasa Malaysia, I have inserted the English translation below each line.

Betapa Hatiku
(Oh How My Heart)

Betapa hatiku
 (Oh how my heart)

Berterima kasih Yesus
(Thank You Jesus)

Kau mengasihiku
(You love me)

Kau memiliku.
(You own me)

Hanya ini Tuhan persembahanku
(This is what I have to offer to You)

Segenap hidupku, jiwa dan ragaku
(My whole life, heart and soul)

Sebab tak ku miliki harta kekayaan
(Because I don't have material possessions)

Yang cukup bererti 'tuk ku persembahkan.
(That are meaningful to be offered.)

Hanya ini Tuhan permohonanku
(This is what I ask dear Lord)

Terimalah Tuhan persembahanku
(Please accept my offerings)

Pakailah hidupku sebagai alat-Mu
(Use my life for Your gains)

Seumur hidupku.
(As long as I live.)

Isn't this a simple yet wonderful hymn?

Please practice what you preach and walk what you talk. Don't just talk and preach big phrases and principles when you can't even bring yourself to really care about others' welfare; not just asking them to attend church meetings without finding out the real reasons that hold them back.

Think about it, think really hard. If you say thinking is of the soul, then please pray with your spirit about it.
