Apparently You Can Floss Religiously and STILL End Up at the Dentist 😭

I Need to Defend Myself First

I need to clear something up first. I'm not one of those people who only floss right before dental appointments.

I actually brush and floss twice a day religiously and consistently: in the morning and at night, with the kind of commitment, discipline, and optimism of someone who thought she was doing reasonably okay. 😄

And yet… I ended up at the dentist this week because I've been having gum pain on the lower right side of my jaw for about one week.

So I finally went to see Dr Priyanka at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. She took one look and basically confirmed, "Yes, the gum is infected."

And there was even pus coming out from one side.

Alamak. This is exactly the kind of sentence you want to hear while lying under bright dental lights. 😭

The Annoying Reality of Teeth Crowding and Periodontitis

For context, I already knew I have periodontitis (gum disease). I also have teeth crowding, which means certain areas are harder to clean no matter how disciplined you are.

So despite regular brushing and flossing, bacteria can still accumulate deep around crowded areas and gum pockets.

Adult life is really humbling sometimes. And yes, dental treatments are usually excluded from insurance claims, which makes the whole experience even more annoying.

Oral health maintenance is one of those things that quietly becomes expensive over time. I've actually written before about my frustrations with how costly healthcare is becoming; you can read more about it in this blog post.

Okay, back to periodontitis. Look, periodontitis is not one of those "buy better toothbrushes and toothpastes, and magically everything disappears" situations.

It's more of an ongoing management thing, which could include damage control, you know, trying to keep bad oral bacteria from turning your gums into a war zone.

After cleaning the infected gum, Dr Priyanka also sent me to the imaging department to do an OPG (orthopantomogram) x-ray so that she could evaluate the condition beneath the gums and around the bone support more thoroughly.

So at the next appointment, the treatment plan for my periodontitis will be based on what she sees from the X-ray findings, which honestly makes me feel both reassured… and slightly nervous. 😭

Apparently my adulthood is just going from "Yay, no cavities" to "Let's evaluate the bone support around your teeth for a no-extraction plan."

Character development indeed. 😄

I Came Home with Antibiotics and Oral Probiotics

After the X-ray, I came home with antibiotics to clear the infection and BioGaia Prodentis Lozenges.

Now THIS caught my attention. Because I've always associated probiotics with gut health. You know… yoghurt drinks and digestive health commercials.

But oral probiotics?

So today I learnt that our mouth has its own microbiome too, which means our mouth is basically an entire ecosystem – a tiny bacterial civilisation with good residents and problematic residents.

The oral probiotic lozenges are meant to support healthier bacterial balance in the mouth. The strain inside this one is Lactobacillus reuteri, which has been studied in relation to gum health and oral inflammation.

So now every morning for the next five days, I will be taking the antibiotics. Then, every night for the next 30 days, I will be taking one lozenge in my mouth while reflecting on how adulthood slowly turns all of us into people with highly specific wellness routines. 😄

Did You Know That Oral Health Would Become This Technical?

Honestly, if you told my younger self that one day I would care deeply about:

- gum pockets
- gum infection
- oral microbiome balance
- probiotic strains

…I would not have believed you.

The funny thing is: when people talk about health maintenance, we usually think about exercise, skincare, hormones, supplements, sleep…

But oral health quietly sits there like, "Excuse me. I, too, can become expensive if ignored."

And to be fair to me, I wasn't completely ignoring it. That's the frustrating part.

Fun Facts I Learnt From This Dental Episode

- Sometimes even when you are trying your best, chronic conditions still need ongoing maintenance, especially something like periodontitis.

- Teeth crowding (which can be genetic, thank you very much) can make cleaning difficult even with good habits of consistent brushing and flossing.

- Gum infections can still happen despite consistent oral care.

- Oral probiotics are apparently a real thing now.

And perhaps most importantly:
Adulting is just progressively collecting more specialised healthcare products over time. 😄

A Dental Visit He Was Actually Looking Forward To (And Yes, That's Normal in This House)

I know this might sound unusual, but my son actually enjoys hospital visits (like mother, like son... 😏)

Doctor's appointments? He's curious.
Dental check-ups? He's excited.
Teeth cleaning and scaling? He looks forward to it.

So no, this wasn't one of those "bracing for impact" parenting moments.

But even then, our recent visit to the dental clinic at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur still stood out in a very meaningful way.

And that's thanks to Dr Priyanka Mahendru.

When a Good Experience Becomes an Exceptional One

When your child is already comfortable with dental visits, the benchmark becomes higher.

It's no longer just about "not being scared". It's about the quality of interaction, attention to detail, and whether the experience feels genuinely thoughtful.

Dr Priyanka impressed me from the start.

She has this ability to quickly find common ground, not just with the child, but also with the parent. There's a natural flow in how she communicates, making the whole session feel collaborative rather than clinical.

What did I appreciate most?

She listens.

As a parent, you're not sidelined. Your input isn't dismissed. Instead, it becomes part of the conversation, which makes a big difference in how confident you feel about your child's care.

A Proud Mum Moment (Because This Is Apparently Rare)

Somewhere in the middle of the session came a moment I didn't expect to feel this proud about.

Dr Priyanka shared that my son has no cavities or caries at all. And then she added something that stayed with me: "This is actually quite rare for boys between 8 to 10 years old."

Let's just say… I had a quiet internal celebration. 😄🎉

Because behind that simple statement is a mix of daily habits, small reminders, and consistent care over time. And hearing it validated by a professional just hits differently.

More Than Just Teeth Cleaning

The session itself was smooth (as expected with him).

But what stood out was how attentive Dr Priyanka was beyond just the cleaning.

She pointed out observations related to his oral health that linked to other areas, including his nasal cavity issues. That kind of holistic attention always reassures me that we're not just addressing symptoms in isolation.

It's thoughtful. It's thorough. And it reflects genuine care.

The Cherry on Top: A Blind Box Plushie

Of course, no story is complete without a little fun.

We signed up for the kids' dental care package, and he got a blind box plushie at the end of the visit.

Was he happy? Absolutely.
Did it make the whole experience even more memorable? Also yes.

Even for a child who already enjoys these visits, that little surprise adds a layer of joy that stays with them.

Why This Experience Matters

This wasn't about overcoming fear.

It was about:
- reinforcing a positive relationship with healthcare
- being heard as a parent
- and seeing a healthcare provider go beyond the basics

And honestly, those are the experiences that build long-term trust.

Would I Recommend This? Without Hesitation

If you're looking for a dentist who:

- communicates well with both child and parent
- pays attention to the bigger picture
- and creates a genuinely positive experience

I would absolutely recommend Dr Priyanka for your child's oral care.

And if you're lucky, you might walk away with more than just clean teeth…
maybe even a proud moment or two!

A Visit That Made Me Feel Seen and Understood About Perimenopause

So I have written about something many women quietly experience – the moment when burnout does not quite feel like burnout anymore. If you missed it, you can read it here: "The Subtle Changes of Your Forties: When Burnout Might Actually Be Perimenopause".

Taking the Next Step

After recognising that some of the changes I was experiencing could be linked to perimenopause, I decided to do something about it. So I went for a consultation with Dr. Premitha Damodaran, a menopause specialist at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

I went in with a list of symptoms: mood swings, sleep disruptions, brain fog, cholesterol shifts, etc., but I also went in with a quiet question: is this really what I think it is?

A Consultation That Looked at the Whole Picture

What I appreciated most about the session was how the consultation itself was not rushed. Instead, it felt like a thoughtful conversation.

She asked about different aspects of my health, not just one isolated symptom. We spoke about my cholesterol levels; menstrual cycle – how regular or irregular it has been; and weight changes. She also asked about my Mirena IUD and why I chose to have it.

But the conversation did not stop there. Beyond that, she explored things that are often easy to dismiss, such as my sleep patterns, mood changes, memory, and even whether I had any joint pain or bowel changes. These things are usually ignored or dismissed, but they are actually part of the bigger picture.

Our body does not work in isolation. Everything is connected. Hence, it makes total sense to also look at all these different aspects of health.

Understanding What My Body Is Already Doing

One of the most reassuring parts of the consultation was realising that my body is not "falling apart". Without going into too much detail, what I wanted to say is that the narrative was changed from "something is wrong" to "something needs to be balanced".

Starting with the Foundation: Sleep

Interestingly, we are not trying to fix everything at once. The first focus is sleep. She explained that improving sleep can influence many other areas such as energy levels, mood, and even the ability to stay consistent with lifestyle habits.

Start with the foundation, and let the rest build from there.

We also spoke about exercise. Not as something I need to force immediately, but as something to build into gradually, especially weight training, once my sleep and energy improve.

There is a time to push, and there is a time to restore. Not as a pressure to immediately "do more", but as a next step when my body is ready. This perspective stayed with me.

Rather than trying to fix everything at once, we start with something that supports the body more holistically. And sometimes, restoration needs to come first.

Walking Away Feeling Supported

If my previous article was about awareness, this experience was about reassurance.

There is something deeply comforting about being heard, understood, and guided with clarity. It reminded me that navigating perimenopause does not have to be confusing or isolating. With the right support, it becomes something we can understand, manage, and even learn from.

I am still at the beginning of this journey. There will likely be adjustments along the way, like new observations, new questions, and perhaps new insights.

But for now, I feel more grounded. Not because everything is solved, but because I understand a little more about what my body is going through. And I truly believe that understanding is the most important first step.

Watch Dr. Premitha's short video about perimenopause.

When Hospital Visits Bring Good News and Gratitude

Recapping one of those "adulting" days at the hospital that turned out surprisingly great! 😊

Now that I'm in my mid-40s 🥹 and with a family history of heart issues (my late dad ❤️), I figured it was time for my first-ever stress test. I got myself the Stress Test package at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. A huge thank you to Dr. Ernest Ng for being so reassuring. The verdict is in: my heart is in good shape at this point! Such a weight off my shoulders. Phew!

Then, it was off to see my OBGYN, Dr. Paul Ng at the same hospital. This was a follow-up appointment for my IUD (treatment for heavy bleeding and cramps). When he looked at the ultrasound and let out a chuckle, my heart (which I just confirmed was fine) nearly leapt out of my chest. For a solid three seconds, I thought I was pregnant! Spoiler alert: I'm not! 😆

Turns out, he was just happy that the IUD is sitting perfectly in place – a huge relief after a previous one went rogue. It’s doing its job beautifully, and for that, I am so grateful. 🙏

So here's a summary: My heart is good, and my uterus is good! 🎉

The fun fact of the day? As the staff at the payment counter cheerfully pointed out, I had just seen the Ng brothers! "Ah, after seeing the younger brother (Dr. Ernest), now you are seeing the older brother (Dr. Paul)!" I think I got the sequence correct? 😆

I'm incredibly thankful for good doctors and good news. 🫶

Recycle Plastic Bottles and Cans with KLEAN

KLEAN's first vending machine at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur

What is KLEAN?

KLEAN is a digital container deposit system in Malaysia that aims to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling as part of a broader effort to encourage sustainable practices and environmental consciousness. It operates through AI-based reverse vending machines (RVMs), where users can deposit used plastic bottles and aluminum cans. For each item recycled, users earn points, which can be exchanged for rewards such as mobile credit or discounts.

By connecting to the Klean Recycling App, KLEAN creates a comprehensive recycling ecosystem that integrates infrastructure, rewards, and reporting. This innovative approach not only makes recycling more accessible but also provides a tangible incentive for individuals to participate, thereby increasing the collection of recyclable materials and reducing the environmental impact of waste.

Apart from the blue KLEAN vending machine at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, I also saw another one, this time yellow, at Paradigm Mall.

The list of machine locations can be found on KLEAN's website.

Packing My JuJuBe Blush Chromatics Midi Backpack

JuJuBe Blush Chromatics Midi Backpack

The JuJuBe Midi Backpack is an affordable, durable, super adorable mid-sized structured backpack. Its attractive versatile design comes with adjustable straps, five pocket stash-capacity, and two elasticized bottle pockets.

Mine is called Blush Chromatics. I love the lovely shade of pastel pink.

The removable brown vegan leather hand sanitizer pouch with attachment clip comes from JuJuBe's Beyond Collection Day 2 Night Crossbody Spice.

Can you spot the lovely limited edition Pink October ribbon pin that I pinned on the front pocket? I purchased it from the Cancer Centre @ Block B, Ground Floor at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀🩷🎀🩷

What Did I Pack for My Daycare Hospitalization?

Here's the list of the stuff that I packed for my daycare hospitalization at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

1. Extra sanitary pads & underwear
2. Sunscreen
3. Wallet
4. Reusable tote bag
5. Small towel
6. Phone charger
7. House keys
8. Extra disposable face masks
9. Notebook & pen
10. Mobile phone

 So much packing space left.

If you notice in the flatlay photo above, I have 3 smaller bags with striped print. Those are from JuJuBe's Classic Collection - Be Set (Shoreline).

Speaking of sunscreen, I brought along three different types of sunscreen by Round Lab (bestselling sunscreen brand in South Korea). They are:

Birch Moisturizing Sunscreen (tube)
Birch Moisturizing Sun Cushion (compact cushion)
Birch Moisturizing Sun Stick (stick)

You might be asking why did I need to pack sunscreen when I was gonna be indoors? Well, that depends on your belief. Some experts say yes to wearing sunscreen indoors because UV light can penetrate windows. The window glass can block the UVB light (UV burning), but UVA (UV aging) can still make it through to damage your skin even if the sun isn't out.

Daycare (Day Surgery) Hospitalization Experience at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur

Why Was I Admitted to the Daycare Ward at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur?

To give some context, here's the background story. Long post ahead!

I hadn't experienced debilitating period cramps for years after giving birth to my two children, with the last birth in 2016. However, in late 2019, I began to experience unusual and occasionally unbearable period cramps. I didn't think much of it initially and simply endured.

When the pandemic struck in March 2020, the monthly pain became so severe that I resorted to painkillers. I started with basic Panadol but eventually needed stronger painkillers like Ponstan, Celebrex, and even Arcoxia.

In August 2021, I visited SJMC and received a diagnosis of adenomyosis. At that time, the O&G specialist suggested a biopsy to rule out more serious issues, but I wasn't ready for further procedures.

As time passed, I continued to rely on painkillers every month during my periods. Despite the excruciating pain, I didn't experience unusually heavy bleeding, and my cycles remained regular. I attributed the increasing discomfort to the natural process of aging.

In September 2022, I developed a lower abdominal pain that persisted for days after my period. I underwent an abdominal ultrasound at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, which didn't reveal significant issues. Therefore, I didn't pursue any follow-up appointments based on the results.

Fast forward to August 2023, after enduring so many months of severely debilitating cramps, heavy bleeding with clots, and having to take medical or emergency leave every month, I decided to consult with the staff MO. She advised me that for a woman of my age, who has given birth before, experiencing such debilitating period pain was unusual. She sent me for an ultrasound focusing on my uterus. The results confirmed the adenomyosis diagnosis and the presence of a possible growth, perhaps a myoma. The MO recommended that I consult with an O&G specialist for further treatment.

Given that Dr. Paul Ng, the obstetrics & gynecology doctor who delivered my second child, practices at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, I naturally chose to seek his expertise for further treatment.

Consultation with Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr Paul Ng and Treatment Options

Based on the reported symptoms, initial diagnosis of adenomyosis, and a transvaginal ultrasound performed by Dr. Paul, there were basically four treatment options available:

1. Monitoring: This entailed continued painkiller use for approximately another decade until menopause. Oh dear.

2. Oral contraceptive pill (Visanne): I ruled out this option due to concerns about potential weight gain associated with oral contraceptives, which I have read online and heard from other fellow mothers.

3. Hysteroscopy D&C + Mirena (IUD) insertion: Hysteroscopy D&C would serve both diagnostic and treatment purposes, addressing abnormal uterine bleeding and removing endometrial polyps. The Mirena, which is a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system helps alleviate heavy menstrual bleeding and pain associated with adenomyosis.

4. Hysterectomy (uterus removal surgery): Dr. Paul advised against this option, considering that my condition wasn't severe enough to warrant such an extensive procedure.

After conducting research over a few weeks, I made the decision to proceed with option 3, which involved hysteroscopy D&C and Mirena IUD insertion.

Daycare Admission Checklist

A few days before the procedure, I visited Dr. Paul's clinic to sign the consent form. At the same time, I also received the checklist above from his nurse, which served as a guideline for the necessary preparations prior to admission.

In my case, I refrained from bringing any valuable items like rings, necklaces, and earrings. I was also advised to pack spare underwear and sanitary pads. An important reminder stressed the avoidance of Chinese herbs or medications both before and after surgery to prevent any contraindications.

I also needed to fast for 6-7 hours before the procedure.

Admission Day

I registered myself at the Daycare Ward at PHKL @ Block B, Level 1 at 7:30am.

Here's the patient registration band with my name, IC number, MRN (Medical Record Number), and registration number (the string of alphanumerics that start with PHKL). My height and weight were also recorded after registration.

Then, the nurses brought me over to my room. Look at the size of the single-bedded room that I was assigned to!

Another angle of the hospital bed.

Super clean toilet.

A cabinet to store my stuff.

Patient gown and surgical cap.

Making myself comfortable while waiting for the procedure scheduled at 12 noon.

Within 20 minutes of registration, the nurses promptly and efficiently measured my blood pressure, conducted an ECG, and drew my blood for blood tests. Awesome!

Meeting Anesthesiologist Dr Lim KY

At around 9:30am, Anesthesiologist Dr Lim KY and a nurse came to see me for preoperative assessment. He inquired about my medical history, prior surgeries, previous experience with anesthesia, medication allergies, recent illnesses, and other pertinent details.

During our discussion, I mentioned a past experience where I felt choked when anesthetic drugs were administered. This happened during my knee arthroscopy procedure. I also informed him of two slightly loose teeth in my lower jaw. Dr. Lim attentively noted my concerns.

From the Ward to Operating Theater and Back to Ward

At 11:20am, one of the nurses came into the room and asked me to change into the patient gown. Then, around 11:35am, I was transported on the hospital bed from Block B (Daycare Ward) to Block C where the Operating Theaters (OTs) are located.

Upon arrival at the OT's waiting and preparation area, the OT nurses transferred me to another bed and verified some procedural details with me in a record book. Subsequently, they pushed my bed to an adjoining waiting area, which one of the OT nurses humorously referred to as the "transit area." I distinctly remember checking the wall clock, and it showed 11:48 am, precisely when I settled in.

After a wait of approximately 20 minutes, I heard someone call out, 'Where is Dr. Paul's patient, Lee XXX XXX?' I was then transported to one of the OTs where Dr. Lim and his team were stationed. They directed me to move onto the operating table, where a heated pad was placed, and I laid down on it.

Dr. Lim introduced one of the operating room nurses, who began preparing the necessary equipment on my body. Dr. Lim also skillfully administered the IV catheter, all the while engaging in lighthearted conversation to help alleviate my apprehension. In response, I shared that I was simply curious about the entire process.

Then, Dr. Paul arrived, greeted me with his reassuring presence, provided a brief overview of the procedure, and then it was showtime!

Thanks to Dr. Lim's attention to my past anesthesia experience, I didn't experience the choking sensation this time. I vividly recalled my eyelids becoming heavier until I eventually blacked out.

Upon waking up, my first instinct was to check the wall clock, which read 1:20 pm. Two other patients shared the recovery area with me. I rested for a while, and to my relief, I didn't feel overly groggy or nauseated, a significant improvement from my previous experience. Around 1:50 pm, I was transported back to my ward.

Arrived at my room safe and sound.

The IV catheter.

The drip to prepare me for hydration before I can eat and drink.

Plain water, sandwich, and Milo to break my fast. I rested for a while before I decided to eat. Then I also changed out from the patient gown into my own clothes and went to pee.

Due to the hysteroscopy D&C procedure, I experienced some light bleeding, which was entirely anticipated. I simply used the sanitary pad I had brought with me earlier in the day.

Around 3:30pm, Dr. Paul came to my room and explained briefly regarding the removal of polyps during the D&C earlier on. He also informed me that he would be issuing a medical leave slip. Then he mentioned I could be discharged after all necessary paperwork were completed by the nurses.

My next follow-up appointment at Dr. Paul's clinic is scheduled next week (7 days post procedure).

I took a quick nap until 4:30pm before I called my husband to let him know when could I be fetched from the hospital. I wasn't allowed to drive post GA.

Antibiotics for the next 7 days.

Panadol Extend were also prescribed for pain management since mild cramping and abdominal discomfort were expected. However, I haven't needed to take any Panadol yet as the discomfort has been quite mild in comparison to my usual period cramps prior to the procedure.

Discharged

At approximately 5:30 pm, one of the nurses handed me the office phone. It was Dr. Lim on the other end. He kindly reminded me to take it easy, avoid driving, no swimming, and refrain from engaging in strenuous activities over the next few days.

Following this, I was discharged once all the required paperwork was completed.

Conclusion

Overall, my hospitalization journey was exceptionally pleasant. Choosing Dr. Paul and Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur for my treatment was undoubtedly the right decision. Dr Lim and the anesthesia team, OT nurses, and daycare ward nurses were all friendly, professional, and supportive. I have no regrets!

Speedy recovery to myself!
