Movie: The Descent (2005)

Afraid of the dark? You will be.

The Descent (2005) is a horror thriller, the prequel to The Descent Part 2 (2009).

Synopsis: Six capable and outgoing women -- Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), Juno (Natalie Mendoza), Beth (Alex Reid), Rebecca (Saskia Mulder), Sam (MyAnna Buring), and Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) -- set off into the Appalachian Mountains of North America to explore an unknown cave system.

Everything is smooth in the beginning but when one of them breaks her leg and they are trapped two miles underground, everything goes horribly awry. Worse still, they are being hunted by savagely ruthless underground cave dwellers.

This movie starts off pretty slow and steady with gripping tension that builds up and kicks off in full blast after an hour or so. There's always this stomach-knotting suspense that makes you feel very uncomfortable and it gets worse as the movie reaches its bloody climax. In fact, claustrophobic emotional traumas are the main element that will keep you glued to the screen.

Lastly, these are the main factors that contribute to this movie's success: the acting is very good and the actresses look genuinely tensed; the cave dwellers/crawlers look pretty convincing with their horrible grubby and menacing appearance; the storyline is simple and supported by good subplots; and gore levels are excellent for those who can stomach all those blood and stuff. Good stuff!
