Weekend DVD: The Last Airbender (2010)

Four Nations, One Destiny

The Last Airbender (2010) is M. Night Shyamalan's live-action movie adapted from the first season of the animated TV series known as Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Synopsis: The world is divided into four kingdoms, each represented by the element they harness, and peace lasted throughout the realms of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire under the supervision of the Avatar, a link to the Spirit World and the only being capable of mastering the use of all four elements.

When young Avatar Aang (Noah Ringer) disappears, the Fire Nation launches an attack to eradicate all members of the Air Nomads to prevent interference in their future plans of dominating the world.

100 years pass and current Fire Lord Ozai (Cliff Curtis) continues to conquer and imprison anyone with elemental "bending" abilities in the Earth and Water Kingdoms, while siblings Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) from a Southern Water Tribe find a mysterious boy trapped beneath the ice outside their village. Upon rescuing him, he reveals himself to be Aang, Avatar and last of the Air Nomads.

Of all the reviews that I've read about this movie, almost all are negative. Friends who have watched this movie don't give good comments as well. So, I skipped watching this movie at the big screens and I wasn't planning to watch it any time soon if not for David's housemate who happens to have bought the DVD. :P

Sadly, although I try to put aside biased expectations, I'm still quite disappointed and I just have to say that this movie's casting and acting are horrible beyond words. The storyline is the typical fantasy stuff but it's nothing out of the ordinary. However, to be fair, the CGI effects are pretty good. Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait for its sequel and hopefully, it will better.
