Butternut squash versus pumpkin

Have you seen a butternut squash before? It's a bell-shaped fruit with yellow skin and sweet orange-yellow fleshy pulp. It has a sweet, nutty taste similar to that of a pumpkin.

And it's more or less triple the price of a pumpkin. Hahaha. Half a fruit as seen in the photo above costs RM14-15 (bought at TTDI wet market).

I buy both pumpkin and butternut squash to make puree for my baby to try. I'm not sure which one he likes more, so for that kind of price, I might as well just stick to pumpkin. :D

Some say butternut squash puree tastes creamier than pumpkin. Personally, I feel that butternut squash is tastes less starchy. Both purees are orange in color. However, butternut squash does have higher calories per 100gm and higher dietary fiber as compared to pumpkin.

So far, I have prepared these butternut squash purees for baby:
  • Butternut squash with pear puree - steam and blend together
  • Butternut squash with yellow sweet potato puree - steam and blend together
More combos ideas: apple, pumpkin, ripe banana, carrots, grated cheese (8mo onwards)
