Year of the Horse: In Between Family, Work, and Small Wins

Chinese New Year has always meant reunion dinners and festive celebrations. As I grow older, I find that it also becomes a reflection of the different roles I carry in life.

There was the familiar Lou Sang with family. Everyone leaned in as we tossed the colourful mix of vegetables, crackers, and abalone into the air. It was fun, slightly chaotic, and exactly how it should be. Family gatherings remind me that beyond deadlines, projects, and responsibilities, there is a foundation that stays constant. Traditions like this are simple, but they anchor the year.

Then there were Lou Sangs with colleagues and clients. One photo captures it well: multiple pairs of chopsticks meeting in the centre of the plate, waiting to toss everything as high as we could! It was a reminder that work is not just about deliverables and targets. It is about people. It is about partnerships built over time, conversations that go beyond emails, and shared meals that make professional relationships more human.

Attending the company’s Chinese New Year dinner party also felt meaningful in its own way. Seeing everyone dressed up, relaxed, and celebrating together allowed me to step back from the usual work mode and appreciate the team behind the projects. Moments like these help us reconnect as people first.

There was also a small but memorable surprise. I won a Uniqlo gift card during the lucky draw! Woohoo! It may seem like a small win, but I have come to appreciate small wins like these more deeply. They are reminders that joy does not always come from grand achievements. Sometimes it comes in unexpected envelopes handed to you at the end of a dinner. See how big my smile was!

Walking through Pavilion Bukit Jalil (it was a planned date with hubby hehehe) and seeing the elaborate Chinese New Year decorations added another layer to the season. The red lanterns, festive displays, and crowd gathering to watch lion dance performance made the celebration feel communal. It was not just about personal rituals or company events. It was about being part of a larger rhythm that happens across the city during this time of year.

The Year of the Horse is said to symbolise strength, endurance, and forward momentum. As we continue into this new year, I hope: To show up for the people who matter. To build meaningful work. To appreciate small wins. And to remember that sometimes, the most valuable moments are the ones that happen in between.

Happy Chinese New Year.

Your Extraordinary Journey to Health & Wellness Campaign by IHH Healthcare Malaysia

Getting Ready for the Year of the Dragon in 2024

As we approach the Year of the Dragon in 2024, IHH Healthcare Malaysia has initiated a new campaign titled "Your Extraordinary Journey to Health & Wellness". This campaign places a special emphasis on delivering expert care throughout the maternity and child care journey, aiming to make every moment truly extraordinary.

Your Extraordinary Journey to Health & Wellness

The central concept that drives this wonderful campaign is to assist expecting mothers and fathers in choosing to embark on their extraordinary journey to parenthood and beyond with any of the hospitals under the IHH Healthcare Malaysia network. These hospitals are Pantai Hospitals, Gleneagles Hospitals, and Prince Court Medical Center.

Adventure of Nara, the Dragon Mother

My absolute favorite thing about this initiative is the introduction of Nara, the Dragon Mother. In conjunction with the Year of the Dragon, the campaign commences by inviting people to discover the magical tale of Nara the Dragon as she embarks on a journey to find exceptional care for her and her precious one. Her journey unfolds with the discovery of unexpected kindness in a caring kingdom.

Below is the video of Nara the Dragon Mother's adventure with her baby.

 Your Extraordinary Storybook

Another feature of this campaign that I absolutely love is the digital storybook! You can create your personalized digital storybook directly from the website.

Just follow the instructions provided on the website, where you can select from three cover stories. Input your Dragon Baby's name, gender, and your own Dragon Mama name. Click "Create Story Now", and voila, you'lll have your own personalized digital storybook!

I also have the hardcopy mini pamphlet that I gotten during the on-ground roadshow over the weekend at Publika, Kuala Lumpur.

Join the #ListenToYourHeartWithPantai campaign at Pantai Hospitals

How well do you know your heart?

Did you know that the No. 1 cause of death in Malaysia is heart disease for the past 18 years? Every year, more and more Malaysians suffer from heart diseases.

Heart disease is no longer an age-related disease like how we used to believe. Someone as young as 35 years old may suffer from heart disease too. The trend of younger people getting heart disease is increasing and this is a worrying scenario.

Do drop by Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Block A lobby, as they are running the #ListenToYourHeart campaign to raise awareness about heart diseases and encourages more people to live a heart-healthy lifestyle.

On-ground interactive games

When you are at the lobby, look out for the above area. Play the game on the TV screen and find out what makes your heart healthy!

Tips to care for your heart

Fortunately, we can take charge of our heart health to minimize the risks of heart diseases.

We can do so by understanding heart disease risk factors, symptoms, preventive measures, and treatments. Then, we can do our part to spread the word and make a positive difference in our community by taking the lead to make some important changes in our life such as:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Stay physically active
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Do not smoke
  • Regularly check your cholesterol and blood pressure

Take loads of selfies & photos

Look out for the colorful frames at the campaign corner and do take selfies and photos!

Play is an important part of everyday life. Play is fundamental to the well-being and happiness of the whole family, according to the LEGO Play Well Study 2022 in conjunction with its 90th anniversary.

The LEGO Group polled more than 55,000 parents and children in over 30 countries and found that almost all parents think children strengthen their creativity (93%), communication (92%), problem-solving skills (92%), and confidence (91%) while they play. Ultimate Fluffy Pancakes

I found a simple, fool-proof recipe that yields the ultimate fluffy pancakes 🥞 everyone will love.

Ingredients:

☑️ 3/4 cup milk
☑️ 1 tbsp white vinegar (I use Bragg's apple cider vinegar)
☑️ 1 cup all purpose flour
☑️ 1/2 tsp salt
☑️ 1 tsp baking powder
☑️ 1/2 tsp baking soda
☑️ 2 tbsp sugar
☑️ 1 egg
☑️ 2 tbsp melted butter
☑️ Cooking spray or butter for greasing the frying pan

How to:

1. Combine milk and vinegar in a large bowl and let stand for about five minutes to let the mixture become sour.

2. Combine dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda) in another bowl.

3. Add in the egg and melted butter into the milk-vinegar mixture and gently whisk.

4. Combine the liquid ingredients into the flour mixture gradually until a smooth batter is achieved.

5. Heat a medium pan over medium heat and grease with cooking spray or butter. Using a soup ladle, spoon about 1/4 cup of batter into the pan. Once bubbly on top, flip the pancake gently using a flat cooking spatula. This takes about a minute or two. Cook other side for another minutes or less, or until that side  is golden brown.

6. Top with a dollop of butter. Serve while hot.

All my pancakes recipes are over here. Bon apetit!

Kids Finance Workshop on 13 November 2021

Lack of Financial Literacy

A survey by the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) found that 1 out of 3 Malaysians rated themselves as having a low level of confidence about financial management. Malaysians lack financial literacy but are generally unaware of the fact.

Wealth Coach, Eva Wong says, "The issues of having too much debt and insufficient retirement savings are due to not having enough money, savings problems, and high lifestyle expenses. These stemmed from our childhood environment that shaped our money value, belief, and skill.

If one does not change the deep-rooted cause, whatever quick fix being done will only be a temporary solution for a short period of time. The same financial issue will resurface again."

Start the Right Financial 💰💹 Education Since Young

Financial literacy is about developing the right character and right habits for finance. Unfortunately, financial literacy is not being taught in school.

Imagine this, if our kids start managing money since young, how would their financial situation be in the future? Research shows that majority of adults regret not saving enough when they are young.

If our kids can learn about financial skill earlier, they can secure their financial future better, wouldn't you agree?
