Helping my baby stay comfortable while teething

Both my boys cut their first tooth when they turned six months old. Generally speaking, teething usually begins during the first six to eight months of baby's first year, and continues up to 36 months (3 years old) or earlier. By then, baby has 20 teeth. My older boy gotten all 20 teeth by 30 months old.

The chart below shows the general teething timeline. For my second boy, he has eight teeth by 12 months old. The numbers indicated in the boxes outlined in green are the months when his teeth were emerging. So now, I'm waiting for his first set of bottom molars to emerge followed by his first set of top molars (see boxes outlined in blue).

Teething times can be the bane of motherhood (tell me about it!) due to increased fussiness/crankiness (the baby, of course, haha), chewing on things (ANYTHING within his reach so you could hear me screaming NOOOOO! PUT THAT DOWN NOW!), and increased amount of drool (this can be yucky). On a side note, my pediatrician tells me that fever and diarrhea are not signs of teething, contrary to popular belief. If baby has fever or diarrhea, it's more likely due to bugs swallowed while chewing on things, so do make sure good hygiene is practiced.

Teething is a natural part of baby's growth, so it's not something that needs to be treated. Having said that, I put some effort to help him deal with teething to make his life (and my life, obviously) more comfortable.

Here are some "gears" that I have used when my baby started teething from six months old.

Six months

Baltic Amber teething necklace

Natural and unpolished Baltic Amber teething necklaces are well-known for their relieving abilities and calming characteristics. However, teething discomfort varies from child to child. Some children may still experience quite a fair bit of discomfort although they are wearing the necklaces. Also, there are claims that teething necklaces are a hoax. Whatever it is, as long as my baby is not experiencing adverse effects and I see that he's doing well while wearing the necklace, I believe it works.

Natural rubber teether - Vulli Sophie The Giraffe Teether

This is probably the most popular teether in the world. It's made from toxic-free paint and rubber; it's bendable and flexible; it's made from one solid piece so choking hazard shouldn't be a problem; it's very easy to clean. I bought it, just because. Haha.

"If you're happy and you know it, chew Sophie."

Eight months

Chilled teether

This kind of liquid-filled teether should only be chilled in the fridge, NOT frozen in the freezer. To be on the safe side, always check for leaks or punctures.

Food-grade silicone teether

I like this teether's soft and flexible texture. Its bright yellow color provides visual and tactile stimulation for baby.

Teething rusks

Store-bought teething rusks save the day. I bought Bellamy's and Only Organic.

Tooth wipes

I used Aleva Naturals Bamboo Baby Tooth 'n' Gum Wipes to clean my baby's gums and four little teeth at eight months old. The main ingredient is Xylitol, a berry extract, which has a slight sweet taste and promotes healthy teeth and gums by fighting bacteria.

When I'm out and about, I prefer Jack N' Jill Natural Baby Gum & Tooth Wipes because they are individually wrapped and convenient to bring along.

Ten months

Soft toothbrush

Since baby always wants something to chew on, why don't get him started to get used to the idea of brushing his teeth? So, I gave him this cute Pigeon Lesson 1 toothbrush that doubled up as a teether too.

Toothpaste

I've read that we should avoid fluoride toothpaste for babies so I chose Little Innoscents organic toothpaste, a natural fluoride-free gel with a cool and minty refreshing taste. See the photo below for its ingredients.

Twelve months

Silicone teething rattle + necklace (rattle for baby, necklace for me)

I bought these matching silicone teething rattle and nursing/teething necklace from TeetherJoy.

I bought this nursing/teething necklace with wooden beads and crocheted beads from YoMommies.

Why do I love nursing/teething necklace? It's multi-functional! First, it's a pretty accessory and I can wear it like any other necklace. Second, my baby can hold onto the beads while he's nursing to keep him focused and not that easily distracted. Third, my baby can gnaw on the beads (under my supervision of course).

Here's my happy one year old with his eight little teeth.

Teething and amber necklaces

Baltic Amber teething necklaces for baby/toddler

My baby started teething when he was 6 months old. Currently, he's teething SIX teeth at the same time since he turns 14 months! He's 16.5 months old now. His six new teeth are two top molars, two top incisors, and two bottom molars. Goodness!

His four new teeth on top!
Didn't manage to snap a photo of his two new bottom teeth.

I bought his first amber necklace for him when he was 6 months old, which he's still wearing until today. When I saw he has started teething molars, I bought another amber necklace for him.

Guess what? After wearing two amber necklaces, I realize that he doesn't drool and he isn't cranky/fussy at all. He bites on his teething toys quite a lot but he doesn't drool all over the place. He still breastfeeds like a champ and eats his solids as if nothing is happening.

Whatever it is, as long as my toddler is not experiencing adverse effects and I see that he's doing well while wearing the necklaces, I believe they work.

Baltic Amber accessories for adults

Baltic Amber is said to be helpful to adults for general healing purposes. I'm wearing a necklace and an anklet.

Brushing my boy's 8 teeth!

Hi everyone! It's me! I have 8 baby teeth now! Mama has started brushing my teeth. See how nice they are?

They started growing since I was 6.5 months old. Mama blogged about my first pearly whites here and here.

By 9 months old, I have 6 teeth. Then, they stopped growing for quite a while until I turned one year old.

And now at 13.5 months, I have 8 baby teeth!

Mama bought an organic toothpaste for me. It's called Ankle Biters Toothpaste. Okay, let me ask mama to explain what toothpaste is this.

Phyto Shield Ankle Biters - Wickedly Wild Berry Toothpaste (75g)

According to this website, this is a toothpaste that gives every parent a peace of mind. This wild berry flavored toothpaste is formulated with the best natural ingredients that your little one deserved. The combination of totarol, xylitol and the finest beneficial oils of peppermint and eucalyptus help you safeguard your child's oral health. The toothpaste is sweetened with natural fruits concentrate and was free from any harsh and harmful chemicals.

In summary, this toothpaste is a great nasties-free (no Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), no paraben, no fluoride, no artificial sweetener, no petrochemical derivatives) toothpaste suitable for children of all ages.

I have two toothbrushes. Mama wears this mini silicone finger "toothbrush" on her index finger, smears a little bit of toothbrush on the bristles, and brushes my 8 little teeth. Then, she wipes off excess toothpaste from my teeth and lips with a wet cloth.

Now, she's using this banana toothbrush. It's the same one that she bought for me as a teether.

Mama hasn't brought me to visit a dentist yet. She's not sure what's the suitable age to introduce me to the dentist.

Do you have any good kids-friendly dentist to recommend? Mama will be happy to hear from you. :)

Baby has two bottom teeth!

10 days ago, I blogged about my boy's one and only tooth. Now he has two bottom teeth! Some friends talk about the need of cleaning baby's new teeth, so I Googled about it.

As soon as baby's teeth start to come through, you can start brushing them. Use a baby toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. The easiest way to brush a baby's teeth is to sit them on your knee with their head resting against your chest. More info here.

So, I got baby Luke his first "toothbrush" - Baby Banana Teething Toothbrush for Infants (Newborn to 12 Months). I haven't really set a brushing teeth routine for him yet. I just let him hold and teeth on this toothbrush for fun.

Description:
  • Safe and bendable
  • Dental-hygienist mom-invented
  • Gently massages gums and teeth
  • Develops good oral hygiene habits early
  • Easy to grasp "A-Peel-ing" banana handles
  • Flexible material decreases risk of mouth injury
  • Non-allergenic, 100% non-toxic highest quality silicone
  • BPA, latex, and phthalate free
  • Dishwasher and freezer friendly

Directions for use: Wash banana brush before using. As with any toothbrush or teether, never leave child unattended during use.

Teething!

Babies vary as to when, and in what order, regarding the arrival of their little 'pearls'. However, generally speaking, the estimated arrival timeline of baby teeth is:
  • Bottom two central incisors: 6-10 months
  • Top two central incisors: 8-12 months
  • Four top & bottom lateral incisors: 9-16 months
  • Four top & bottom canines: 16-23 months
  • Four first molars: 13-19 months
  • Four second molars: 23-33 months
Total: 20 baby teeth in the span of more or less 33 months (almost 3 years).

Babies might be facing some, if not all, of the following symptoms during teething (a tooth moves towards the gums and cuts through):
  • Chewing and gnawing own fingers and anything they put into their mouth
  • Drooling much more than usual
  • Irritable, cranky, and clingy
  • Might wake up crying in the middle of the night
  • Mild fever (below 38°C). Note: Some pediatricians rule this out
  • Runnier poop than usual (not diarrhea)
  • Nappy rash
  • Drinking less milk and/or eating less solid food
  • Tender and swollen gums where a tooth is about to cut through

My boy started excessive drooling when he was about 4 months old. About two weeks later, he was in a frenzied state of gnawing everything but preferred chewing my fingers. This lasted for quite a while. He had mild fever once. He was super cranky and clingy several nights for as long as I can remember. I bought an amber teething necklace for him when he was 5 months plus. His drooling reduced noticeably.

One day, he turned 6.5 months and his FIRST lower incisor cut through! Woohoo! I think the second bottom tooth is following soon.
