Everyone has a breaking point.
The Experiment (2010) is a thriller based on Oliver Hirshbiegel's original German movie, Das Experiment (2001).
26 men, including Travis (Adrien Brody, Predators (2010)) and Barris (Forest Whitaker, Repo Men (2010)) responded to an offer to earn $14,000 in two weeks by participating in a behavioral study. Little do they know that they will become subjects of a psychological experiment to study aggressive behavior in an artificial prison setting. These men are chosen to simulate the roles of guards and prisoners, prompting a host of dark consequences.
The story is based on an incident at Stanford University in 1971 in which an experiment that sought to find out how ordinary people would react in a prison situation went horribly awry.
Having said that, this movie does provide an interesting premise. A bunch of strangers, all attracted to the $14,000 payment, and all they have to do is to spend two weeks in a prison environment. Sounds like an easy deal, right?
However, on another note, this movies also provides a rather disturbing insight about human being's true nature and behavior, and group dynamics. What will happen if a group of people of different personalities are confined in a stressful environment for a certain period of time? What will happen when certain people become power-crazy and start to assume leadership? The movie has the answer.
A good watch on a weekend. :)
