Movie: Respire (2011)

Hold Your Breath

Respire (2011) is a supernatural horror movie.

Synopsis: The ancient Romans believed that the soul escaped one's body with the last breath and it was said to hold the power to cure disease and prolong life. Based on this belief, Dr. Kaminsky conducted experiments to harness the power in the last breath in the 1930s but he was murdered.

Fast forward to almost 80 years later, Susan Jordan (Tracy Teague), the owner of a local novelty shop happens to own an antique box once belonged to Dr. Kaminsky. Raif Collins (Mathew J. Wright) and a couple, Alex Poe (Vince Eustace) and Ruby Wilkins (Ellie Torrez) show much enthusiasm to buy the box from Susan. Susan finds herself in serious trouble when she uncovers the secrets the much coveted box holds.

This is not a high-budget Hollywood movie and there are no A-list stars but the brilliant storyline is good enough to hold your attention. The opening sequence of the movie is the best part of all. Beautifully and silently paced, it shows the transition from the 1930s to current day, thus giving us a clear background of the entire story.

Despite having a promising storyline, the cast's performance fails to do the movie justice. The younger teen stars don't do much except being stupid and annoying. Nothing to shout about the main characters' performance as well.

I seriously wonder if there will be a remake of this movie by Hollywood's big production houses. There's much potential for a more serious and terrifying movie with solid performances from more experienced stars.

Overall, I think this is the kind of movie that you might wanna watch just for the sake of killing time.
