Movie: Life of Pi (2012)

The journey of a lifetime

Life of Pi (2012) is a magical adventure movie based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel. Ang Lee is the director.

Synopsis: Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) and his family lives in Pondicherry, India. His father is a zoo keeper. One day, Pi's father decides to move the family to Canada. Halfway through their journey, the ship carrying their animals (and Pi's family) sinks due to a storm. Pi finds himself stranded in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat and some wild animals as his companions – including an adult Bengal tiger called "Richard Parker" – all fighting for survival.

This is a very aesthetically beautiful movie with breathtaking visuals, meaningful lessons and questions about life and religion, and a really great storytelling approach. There are poignant, funny, and tear-jerking moments at different points of the movie. I have to agree that Ang Lee did an awesome job directing this movie. Kudos!

Note: Ang Lee directed the famous Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain.

James Cameron gave us a fantastic 3D experience with his mega-blockbuster, Avatar in 2009. Life of Pi has an almost similar impact.

Yann Martel, the author of the novel on which the movie is based, says, "I'm happy it works so well as a film. Even if the ending is not as ambiguous as the book's, the possibility that there might be another version of Pi's story comes at you unexpectedly and raises the same important questions about truth, perception, and belief." [via]

Two memorable quotes from the movie:

  • All of life is an act of letting go but what hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.
  • Faith is a house with many rooms. But no room for doubt? Oh plenty, on every floor. Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing. Afterall, you cannot know the strength of your faith until it is tested.

Don't miss this meaningful movie!

Revisit Chayo, Kelana Mall for paneer dishes

Chayo @ Kelana Mall, SS6/14, Kelana Jaya is famous for their Northern Indian vegetarian meals. Kelana Mall is located in the vicinity of LDP Giant and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Check out the previous posts of my visits to Chayo.

Paneer Pasta
Paneer is a kind of cheese in the Indian cuisine. Paneer Pasta is an interesting dish of paneer cubes, Farfalle (butterflies pasta), spices, and garnished with chopped coriander leaves.

Paneer Fried Rice Indian Style
The combination of paneer cubes, chopped capsicum, long beans, carrot, and ginger slices with rice is interesting and delicious. Paneer Fried Rice is served with Chayo's special sambal, fresh cabbage, carrot and cucumber, and a piece of crunchy papadom.

Revisit Chayo, Kelana Mall for light vegetarian meals

Chayo @ Kelana Mall, SS6/14, Kelana Jaya is famous for their Northern Indian vegetarian meals. Kelana Mall is located in the vicinity of LDP Giant and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Check out the previous posts of my visits to Chayo.

Broccoli Soup
Western soups are usually thickened with cream. At Chayo, their broccoli soup is thickened with beans which turns out to be quite delicious. I do love its dhal-like consistency and taste and I find it blissful to drink hot soup on a rainy day.

Tofu Buji on Toasts
Tofu Buji is made from mashed tofu cooked with spices and coriander leaves. To balance this dish's saltiness, two pieces of toasts are served. Good appetizer!

If you happen to drop by Kelana Mall after shopping at LDP Giant, do visit Chayo and enjoy their delicious and healthy selection of vegetarian meals. :)

Revisit Chayo, Kelana Mall for Northern Indian meals

I'm still in love with Northern Indian meals at Chayo, Kelana Mall, SS6/14, Kelana Jaya. Kelana Mall is located in the vicinity of LDP Giant and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Check out my previous visits to Chayo:
Masala Tea & Mushroom Fried Rice
Yogi Tree Tea & Palak Paneer with Basmati Rice
Korean Bowl Rice with Tom Yam Curry & Mixed Vegetables Paratha with Yoghurt & Dhal
Tofu Buji on Toasts & Broccoli Soup

Here's yesterday's lunch.

North Indian Lunch Set

This lunch set comes with white rice/chapati (your choice), a bowl of raw cucumber, tomatoes, and onions, a bowl of yoghurt, a bowl of stir-fried vegetables, and a bowl of dhal. For drinks, I choose Spiced Tea. You can choose Masala Tea too if you like.

Here's the dhal. From my previous visits, Chayo's dhal was cooked with green beans. For yesterday's, it was lentils. Anyway, I love their flavorful dhal regardless of the bean types. :)

Come and visit Chayo for their healthy and delicious vegetarian meals!

I'm still amazed at how economical it is to buy lunch from mamak restaurants. Two vegetables dishes plus white rice cost me only RM2.50.

Northern Indian Meals @ Chayo, Kelana Mall

Recently, I'm in love with Northern Indian meals at Chayo, Kelana Mall, SS6/14, Kelana Jaya. Kelana Mall is located in the vicinity of LDP Giant and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Check out my previous visits to Chayo:
Masala Tea & Mushroom Fried Rice
Yogi Tree Tea & Palak Paneer with Basmati Rice

Note: Chayo serves vegetarian dishes.

This week, I went to Chayo again with Windy, my colleague. She's also a fan of Chayo.

Korean Bowl Rice with Tom Yam Curry

The rice has a delightful fragrant aroma of mixed herbs and garlic. Chopped red and yellow capsicum gives the rice its slightly colorful appearance. The Tom Yam Curry is sourish, less spicy, and packed with cauliflowers, potatoes, and herbs. Overall, this is a very filling and delicious vegetarian dish.

Mixed Vegetables Paratha with Yoghurt & Dhal

Four slices of mixed vegetables paratha are served with a small bowl of yoghurt, dhal, a mini block of vegetable spread, and a sourish paste. Don't be fooled by the size of the paratha's portion; they're surprisingly filling. I've to leave the last piece untouched because I was so full. The accompanying dhal and yoghurt are delicious too.

I'd love to visit Chayo again soon! :)

Fried Bittergourd

Fried bitter gourd is one my favorite vegetables whenever I opt for nasi kandar for lunch or dinner.

I don't think I can ever cook this delicious, evil-looking dish because I can't understand half of its ingredients. :P So, here's a link for the recipe. :D

Woman's Moon Cycle Tea

I went to Chayo, Kelana Mall for lunch again today after a previous visit within this week.

I ordered this interesting tea from Yogi Tree called Woman's Moon Cycle.

Looking at its description of directions and ingredients, perhaps I should get one box and start drinking everyday. I suppose it'll help to alleviate my monthly abdominal cramps.

For my lunch, I ordered Palak Paneer with rice. Palak Paneer is a popular traditional Northern Indian vegetarian dish and is an integral part of the Punjabi cuisine. It's made from spinach and paneer cheese. I love the ginger slices that come with this healthy and delicious dish.

Vegetarian lunch at Chayo, Kelana Mall. Masala Tea is... an acquired taste. Not sure if I'll try it again. The Mushroom Fried Rice turns out to be very satisfying - packed with black pepper, oyster mushroom, and ginger slices. Delicious!

Rice Dishes @ D'Valley Kafe & Bistro (Plaza Glomac, Kelana Jaya)

Last Friday's dinner was with my boyfriend at D'Valley Kafe & Bistro @ Plaza Glomac, Kelana Jaya.

Here's the address:
D'Valley Kafe & Bistro
Plaza Glomac,
Block D-12-1, Jalan SS7/19,
47301 Kelana Jaya.
Tel/Fax: 03-7885 8378
(Landmark: Look for a block of outlets beside Sterling Condominium)

I've provided the links of my previous visits to D'Valley at the bottom of
this post. Check them out! :)

Spicy Beef with Peas & Saffron Rice is one of the dishes featured on the Northern Indian cuisine menu. Packed with a notable portion of tender beef slices and green peas, each mouthful with accompanying saffron rice is satisfying.

Brinjal Masala with Saffron Rice is another dish featured on the Northern Indian cuisine menu as well. I enjoy munching on the brinjals with red masala gravy. Well, I like my vegetables to be crunchy, especially brinjals. Coupled with saffron rice, I'd say this is a perfect dish for dinner. Simply delicious.

Note: D'Valley Kafe & Bistro serves three main cuisines - Local, Northern Indian, Western. A variety of appetizers, side dishes, and drinks are available too.

For dessert, if you're craving for a decent, non-sickening cheesecake, try D'Valley's homemade cheesecake. Priced at RM6.90 per slice at the moment, lychee bits are mixed with the cake's cheesy portion that leaves a subtle, non-overwhelming fruity taste in your mouth. Love it! :)

Do drop by! :)

By the way, they've catering service as well. Check out their Facebook Fan Page for more details.

2nd Spicy Tweet-up at My Spicy Corner @ SS9A/17

Recap on first tweet-up.

Now, it's 2nd tweet-up! Let me highlight "How to go to @SpicyCorner" again.

The easiest way to reach this restaurant without getting lost in the jungle of Kpg Tunku and Sg Way is by taking the
Federal Highway (follow the direction that heads towards KL). Take the left turn (under) the LDP cable bridge, then turn left into an uphill road. Go straight, find Caltex and park your car somewhere there. My Spicy Corner is opposite Caltex. Easy, right?

Banana Leaf Rice (Vegetarian) Set

See those little metal bowls surrounding my rice and papadum? From left to right: Rasam, vegetables, dhal, potatoes, vegetarian curry, and dessert (sago, milk, vermicelli). I've my lunch with my fingers today! :D

As usual, I ordered one Madras Tea. Read my recap (link on top) about the first tweet-up to find out what Madras Tea is.

Fellow Tweeples (@chrisleow, @joycescapade - that's me! @wind_goddess, and @geminianeyes) with @SpicyGuy, our mini tweet-up's great host! Eat, chat, laugh. :D

Spicy Tweet-up at My Spicy Corner @ SS9A/17

This is the first time I join tweet-ups with new friends from Twitterverse.

It's indeed great to gather at @SpicyCorner, hosted by the owner of My Spicy Corner, Ija Mohan (@SpicyGuy), and meeting up for lunch with Niki Cheong (@nikicheong), Peter Pek (@PeterPek), Melvin (@melvinchanwh) April (@aprilyim), Praveen (@veen1828), Rachel (@redsheep), and others who haven't join Twitter yet. Oh yeah, my sister, Judith (@ditditdit).

Here comes good food!

Madras Tea
You need to master the technique to drink this tea or you'll end up drinking teh tarik (like what happened to me. LOL!) My sister managed to drink the whole glass without disrupting the nice layering of tea and fresh milk!

The tea layer is bitter while the fresh milk layer is refreshing. So, you need to sip it slowly, let the milk mixes itself with the tea in your palate. Wow, awesome! I mean, I managed to take a sip in this way before I stirred the whole glass into teh tarik. :S

Three-layered Tea
Brown sugar, milk, and tea. What do you expect? Great concoction to soothe your cravings for tea beverages.

Cheesey Naan
Best shared - it's a rather filling dish. The gravy that comes with the naan is delicious. I wonder what is it called.

Chicken Tandoori
The traditional dish that comes with naan, served with mint paste. Good choice for health-conscious people - not oily.

Great time, great people, great food, great thing to do on a Sunday!

Quoting Niki Cheong's T-shirt:
My boss wanted me to work this weekend. (Front)
But I'm here (Back).

LOL!

[Friday-8] Slumdog Millionaire

Okay, I know it's kinda late to talk about Slumdog Millionaire, you know, the winner of Best Motion Picture of The Year @ The Oscars. I guess everybody has watched it and I heard fantastic comments from friends over and over again that this movie was REALLY GOOD! Well, I've been procrastinating. It's either watch or don't watch. And so, I watched! Yay!

Actually, I should be watching Jin Hutan. However, my sister insisted that we must watch Slumdog this week before it was retired from being shown in cinemas from next week onwards. So, although the tickets were bought, I went into the cinema with mixed feelings and speculations and without expectations.

The opening scene erased all my doubts. I was captured by this: "Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees. How did he do it? A) He cheated, B) He's lucky, C) He's a genius, D) It is written." And the movie rolled on!

Seriously speaking, the element that kept my attention the most throughout the entire movie was neither the 18-year old Dev Patel (born in 1990) nor the 24-year old Freida Pinto (born in 1984). It was the impressive acting from the child actors, especially the boys! They appeared up to one-third of the entire movie being themselves, as some of them were slum kids in real life. Awesome!

There were no subtitles provided for conversations spoken in English. Only the Hindi conversations were translated as burnt-in subtitles throughout the entire movie.

Jamal and Latika were finally together despite hiccups that forced them to be apart throughout their childhood and teen years. Latika said, it's destiny. In fact, at the end of the movie, the answer was given to the question in the opening scene. D. It is written, thus implying destiny. I was so mesmerized. Glad that I watched it.

Brilliant production.

There are more movies that I couldn't afford to miss!

Check out Jai Ho!
