2009 Goals / Resolutions!

From my point of view, one should not wait until an arbitrary date (let's say 31/12 or 1/1) to make new year goals / resolutions. Setting goals and making and/or renewing resolutions should be a daily affair, if one has the heart and will, depending on what the matter is.

Anyway, I found something really helpful from the web.

Use the S.M.A.R.T acronym (recommended by management expert Peter Drucker) as a guideline for setting objectives, be they personal or work-related. There are many sites with references to this idea globally. So, I'd just highlight the main points. Examples have been modified so that they are more locally adaptable (in fact, to myself. Haha!). However, the core/original S.M.A.R.T context is not altered in any way. 


Specific
Be detailed, not general about setting goals. E.g. Don't just say, "Save more money each month." One should say, "Save at least RM200 each month."

Measurable
Don't just say, "Go to church meetings more often." Change it to, "Attend church meetings, at least every Lord's Day morning." 


Achievable
Don't make a habit out of saying, "I will be the best employee of the year." Come on, no one is perfect. Ambitious goals don't necessarily mean achievable. Make your resolution something that's more possible, such as, "Improve next year's performance review by at least one grade."

Realistic

No matter how competent one is in setting goals, they should be realistic based on what resources and tools available on hand.

Timely
In summary, set "deadlines" to track progress. Don't leave "back doors". Most resolutions fail if one is not keen on getting them done.

13. Humility:
Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

I'll Be There
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase "I'll be there." Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give. When we're truly present for other people, important things happen to them and us. We are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored emotionally and spiritually. Being there is at the very core of civility.

I Miss You
Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples simply and sincerely say to each other "I miss you." This powerful affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired, and loved. Consider how ecstatic you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you."

I Respect You / I Trust You
Respect and trust is another way of showing love. It conveys the feeling that another person is a true equal. If you talk to your children as if they were adults, you will strengthen the bonds and become close friends. This applies to all interpersonal relationships.

May Be You're Right
This phrase is highly effective in diffusing an argument and restoring frayed emotions. The flip side to "may be you're right" is the humility of admitting maybe "I'm wrong." Let's face it. When you have a heated argument with someone, all you do is cement the other person's point of view. They, or you, will not change their stance and you run the risk of seriously damaging the relationship between you. Saying "may be you're right" can open the door to further explore the subject, in which you may then have the opportunity to get your view across in a more rational manner.

Please Forgive Me
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people would admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are vulnerable to faults and failures. A man should never be ashamed to own up that he has been in the wrong, which is saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.

I Thank You
Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy. People who enjoy the companionship of good, close friends are those who don't take daily courtesies for granted. They are quick to thank their friends for their many expressions of kindness. On the other hand, people whose circle of friends is severely constricted often do not have the attitude of gratitude.

Count On Me
A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. Loyalty is an essential ingredient for true friendship; it is the emotional glue that bonds people. Those that are rich in their relationships tend to be steady and true friends. When troubles come, a good friend is there indicating "you can count on me."

The best of friends see a need and try to fill it. When they spot a hurt they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they pitch in and help.

I Understand You
People become closer and enjoy each other more if they feel the other person accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know in so many little ways that you understand them, is one of the most powerful tools for healing relationship. This applies to any relationship.

Go For It
We are all unique individuals. Don't try to get your friends to conform to your ideals. Support them in pursuing their interests, no matter how weird they seem to you. Everyone has dreams, dreams that are unique to that person only. Support and encourage your friends to follow their dreams. Tell them to "go for it."

I Love You
Perhaps the most important three words that you can say. Telling someone that you truly love them satisfies a person's deepest emotional needs. The need to belong, to feel appreciated, and to be wanted. Your spouse, your children, your friends, and you, all need to hear those three little words, "I love you."

Instant glutinous rice ball

Winter Solstice was over for quite a while. However, I'm still looking for tang yuan as I didn't manage to have them on that day itself.

Instant Mini Glutinous Rice Ball could be bought from Tesco. I chose the one with black sesame paste as its filling. Next time, I'll try those with red bean paste as its filling.

These are the frozen rice balls (prior putting them into boiling water). They look like naphthalene balls, right? The hilarious thing was that when I accidentally dropped one of them onto the kitchen floor, it didn't burst but melantun on the floor like guli. I began to wonder are these 'ballies' edible? :S

One of the instructions indicated, "Do not defrost. Put into boiling water." So, after they were cooked in boiling water for about 8 minutes, here's how they will look like - larger, very soft, almost mushy.

My fav snack 2

Here's another entry about my fav snack, after this one. Also from Korea, same brand - LOTTE. It's called Choco Pie.

Choco Pie's packaging - 6 packs per box (RM4++)

Warning: Do not indulge!

Based on its nutrition facts, ONE Choco Pie has 4g of saturated fat, which is 20% out of DV (Daily Values). Indulge will spell disaster. :P

Cooking is my passion

This dish is healthy and delicious. I should have added red chili slices. Then, its color would blend nicely and this dish would be more presentable. As usual, stir-fry dish is always faster to cook and healthier to eat.

This time round, I've only used chicken meat (skinless breast meat without fat is recommended, marinated with light soy sauce and Chinese wine), broccoli (cut into bite-size chunks, Chinese mushrooms (soaked and halved), and rice vermicelli (soaked). Add a little bit of light soy sauce when cooking is almost done to add some saltiness. To enhance its flavor, I used a dash of Chinese wine (Shao-xing).

How I wish I could tell my dad that I've inherited his passion (not just responsibility) for cooking. :)

'3 8'

For your information, '3 8' is pronounced as 'San Pat' in Mandarin/Hokkien, meaning 'suka menjaga tepi kain orang' in BM. What's the equivalent meaning in English? I can't think of any. The closest meaning would be 'busybody'.

Anyway, due to one of my work-related responsibilities, I've cultivated a very deep interest in the glamorous world of Malaysian artistes!

Chilled Dragon Fruit Cheesecake

Called Katy and she said, "Yes, go ahead!" Thank you so much, Katy!

So, this photo-heavy post is credited to Katy for her recipe called Chilled Dragon Fruit Cheesecake. :D


Step 1: Prepare the ingredients - 500g cream cheese, 300g cream, 2-3 dragon fruits, 100g butter, 8-12 pieces digestive biscuits.

Step 2: Cut the dragon fruits into pieces.

Step 3: To make the base, mix crumbled digestive biscuits with butter. Press into cake tin and freeze in the fridge.

Step 4a: Cook the dragon fruits.....

Step 4b: .....till they turn lumpy.

Step 5: Set the dragon fruits aside to cool and measure the cream.

Step 6: Beat the cream cheese with sugar.

Step 7: When the cream cheese is smooth, add cream and gelatin.

Step 8: Divide the cream cheese into two batches, add dragon fruits to one of them.

Step 9: Fill the cake tin with layers.

Step 10: Keep swirling as the tin fills up to get marbled effect.

Step 11: Put into the fridge to set and chill.

Step 12: It's feasting time!

Herbal soup for health

People say, girls must learn to take care of their health. One essential herbal soup that must be taken at least once a month is called 八珍汤.

Here's an example of pre-packed soup base. Got this from Tesco.

Bring a liter of water to boil and add in the herbs (the white packet). For extra flavor, add in a few pieces of dried Chinese mushroom and some roots (according to my mum, it's 'dong guai'). Let everything simmer in the pot.

While waiting for the soup to boil, clean up a piece of chicken thigh by peeling off its skin and fat layers (as much as possible). Then, put it into the pot. Cover and let it simmer for about 40 minutes or so. Then, switch off the power and leave it overnight.

The next morning, add in another two hard-boiled eggs (cooked separately) after peeling off the shell. Bring everything to boil for about 15 minutes before switching the power to 'low'. In order for the eggs to absorb the goodness of the soup, let them stay immersed till dinner time. The eggs will turn brown and flavorful!

Filem Histeria

Sebagai peminat filem-filem seram, saya pasti berkunjung ke pawagam setiap kali filem baru dipertontonkan, tanpa mengira produser, pengarah mahupun pelakon yang terlibat dalam filem tersebut.

Jika anda ingin menonton filem-filem seram Malaysia, antara filem rekomendasi saya termasuklah Susuk, Chermin dan Congkak. Dukun tidak ditayangkan, ah... malangnya. Macam menunggu kucing bertanduk kalau berharap filem ini akan ditayangkan di Malaysia.


Histeria merupakan filem seram Malaysia yang terbaru (dan juga terakhir bagi tahun 2008?). Desas-desus tentang keseraman filem ini telah mulai kedengaran sejak tahun 2007. Treler yang ditontoni melalui Youtube (kalau tak silap) menayangkan adegan-adegan yang cukup kukuh terpahat dalam ingatan saya. Salah satunya ada pada gambar di bawah. Not bad. Tapi, kalau warna kesan darah tu boleh real sikit, feelingnya pasti lebih hebat lagi.

Jalan cerita filem ini tidak mengelirukan dan agak mudah untuk mengagak apa yang akan berlaku seterusnya, termasuklah endingnya. Keseraman filem ini amat bergantung pada muzik latar belakang, sudut kamera dan kegelapan atau kesuraman kawasan sekeliling. Kalau elemen-elemen ini dikecualikan, filem ini akan kelihatan kosong dan tak bermaya. Riak wajah newcomer yang membintangi filem ini turut meningkatkan rasa berdebar-debar. Watak Murni (lakonan Liyana Jasmay) boleh dikatakan terbaik pada pendapat saya.


Sinopsis ringkas: Enam orang pelajar perempuan (Alyssa, Murni, Ju, dan geng) yang dikenakan hukuman disiplin dan seorang pengawas perempuan (Zeta) bermalam di dorm lama sekolah mereka. Mereka mula mengalami kejadian-kejadian pelik setelah salah seorang daripada mereka mengambil sesuatu yang bukan milik mereka dari kawasan kebun. Seekor lembaga yang dikatakan penunggu besut mengacau dan membunuh mereka satu demi satu. Siapakah dalang di sebalik pembunuhan ini? Mengapa penunggu itu membunuh orang?

My fav snack

Do you know about LOTTE ALMOND PEPERO stick biscuit with chocolate?

One thing for sure, this Korean snack is fantastic! Love the almond and chocolate combination. How is it different from almond-choc bar? Well, I guess it's the size. At least, I won't feel guilty when I chomped down 2 sticks at one time, compared to 2 cubes of choc, right? :P

Winter Solstice (冬至) - 21 December 2008

2008's Winter Solstice (冬至) falls on 21 December. It's the Tang Yuan (汤圆) time again. Yay! Tang () is soup and Yuan () is round, which implies reunion and full satisfaction.

Tang-Yuan are sweet glutinous balls made from glutinous rice flour and served with hot sugary water. The default (:P) version has no filling in the center. The newer versions have fillings such as red bean paste, creamy peanut or sesame paste.

Here are a few recipes I got from Nanyang:

椰汁糯米丸

材料A糯米粉 200g、粘米粉 50g、滚水 150-160ml、熟橙色蕃薯泥 135g

材料B糯米粉 175g、粘米粉 25g、滚水 170ml 或适量、熟紫色蕃薯泥 90g

椰汁糖水材料:清水 750ml、白糖 225g、班兰叶3(打结)、沙谷米 3 汤匙 (浸泡)、椰浆头 300ml、盐 3/4 茶匙

做法:
1. 把材料 A 混合成面团,然后分成小份搓成丸状。

2. 把材料 B 混合,然后分成小份搓成丸状。

3. 把所有丸子煮至浮起,然后浸入冰水中 10 分钟。

4. 把白糖和班兰叶加清水煮至滚,然后放入沙谷米煮至透明后加入椰浆和盐。再次煮滚后加入糯米丸即可。


橙酒浆糯米丸

材料:香蕉2(切片)、橙由数瓣、君度橙酒 3 汤匙、糯米粉 225g、粘米粉 25g、澄面粉 1 汤匙、滚水 100ml100-120ml 冷水 (或适量)

糖水:幼糖 150g、清水 1L

做法:
1. 把所有粉料混合,然后倒入滚水,搅拌均匀后加入冷水,搓成光滑面团。

2.
把面团分成小份后搓成丸状。

3.
把糯米丸放入滚水里煮至浮起,然后放入冰水中浸泡 10分钟。

4. 把糖和清水煮至滚,然后熄火,加入香蕉和橙肉。

5. 加入糯米丸和拌入橙酒,即可享用。

黑糯米糊汤丸

材料A黑糯米 300g、白糯米 2 汤匙

材料B1L、糖适量、班兰叶 3 片、为食粉打芡

材料C糯米粉 230g、水 230ml

做法:
1. 将材料 A 炒香,磨成粉,拌入水和班兰叶煮滚。

2. 加入糖调味,打芡拌至浓滑。

3. 将糯米粉及水搓至幼滑。备用。

4. 把面团揉成鱼丸形状,放入滚水内煮至浮起。

5. 将汤丸捞起放入黑糯米糊内趁热进食。


豆浆汤丸

材料:糯米粉 250g、水适量、粉红食物色素数滴

馅料:豆沙

糖水材料:豆浆水 2L (有甜昧)

做法:
1. 将糯米粉加水及粉红色素搓成幼滑面团,分成小粒,然后包入豆沙。

2. 把汤丸放入滚水内煮至浮起。

3. 将汤丸取出放入热豆浆即可享用。

The default version recipe (in English)

Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous rice flour, 4 ounces water, brown sugar to taste, fresh ginger

Preparation:
1. Pour the glutinous rice flour in a bowl and slowly add water until the mixture becomes the texture of dough. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes.

2. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.

3. Drop the balls into boiling water and cook them until they float (about 5 to 10 minutes).

4. While the balls are cooking, prepare a sweet soup by boiling water and adding brown sugar. Fresh ginger can also be added to the soup.

5. Put the cooked balls into the soup and serve.

Microsoft issuing emergency fix for browser flaw

Microsoft Corp. is taking the unusual step of issuing an emergency fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer software that has exposed millions of users to having their computers taken over by hackers.

The "zero-day" vulnerability, which came to light last week, allows criminals to take over victims' machines simply by steering them to infected Web sites; users don't have to download anything for their computers to get infected, which makes the flaw in Internet Explorer's programming code so dangerous. Internet Explorer is the world's most widely used Web browser.


Microsoft said it plans to ship a security update, rated "critical," for the browser on Wednesday. People with the Windows Update feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically.


Thousands of Web sites already have been compromised by criminals looking to exploit the flaw. The bad guys have loaded malicious code onto those sites that automatically infect visitors' machines if they're using Internet Explorer and haven't employed a complicated series of workarounds that Microsoft has suggested.


Microsoft said it has seen attacks targeting the flaw only in Internet Explorer 7, the most widely used version, but has cautioned that all other current editions of the browser are vulnerable.
Microsoft rarely issues security fixes for its software outside of its regular monthly updates. The company last did it in October, and a year and half before that.

K for Klaatu

First of all, I've never watched the 1951 version of "The Day The Earth Stood Still". So, I've no idea what the movie is about and how the 2008 version is gonna be.

The sci-fi genre is not appealing to my taste, honestly speaking. I shun Aliens vs Predators, which is too harsh and violent! The Day The Earth Stood Still turns out to be very mild, melancholic, and not too 'alien'.

One more thing, it's good to see that the two leading characters are not intimately related, like what happened in The Incredible Hulk (I almost puked while watching the lovey-dovey, "please-don't-hurt-him!" scenes).

Keanu Reeves (as Klaatu, the alien) and Jennifer Connelly (as Dr. Helen Benson, an astrobiologist) stay "professional", as depicted throughout the whole film. Klaatu's final decision to stop the earth from total destruction is due to his seeing of the other side of humanity, not due to love between a man and a woman. Of course, he's an alien and aliens are not supposed to know how humans are feeling, but who knows? May be the next movie would be about the tragic love of an ET with a man/woman. (*eyes rolling*)

Anyway, it's up to you, whether you want to watch or not. There are neither action nor intimate scenes, not even heart-wrenching or tear-provoking scenes. But CGI does play a big role here. There are moments I want to slap the boy (Jaden Smith as Jacob Bensen, Helen's young stepson) to shut him up though. Lol...

What?

Done modifying & deleting the said "issue" from my blog. :P

Most living creatures, I mean those with souls, will release their pent-up energy by channeling it in different ways. Dogs, for example, will display destructive and erratic behaviors if they are locked up for too long and/or not walked/exercised for quite some time. So, get a cat, which is less troublesome because they seldom display affection openly and will not behave destructively unless provoked.

My point is, if I do not have "this" channel to vent my pent-up inward "energy", I'll have to seek for alternatives. Psychologists advise us not to lock up frustration, anger, dissatisfaction and other negative energies within us or we'll go kuku. And, for a writer not to write what fascinates them is equivalent to asking a dog not to bark.

Ah well...

That's why I told somebody that I don't like human beings. So mafan and opinionated.

May be I should get a fish or a turtle. At least they won't COMPLAIN when I TALK to them.

Remembering Gwangju, South Korea

Remember Malaysia's very own May 13, 1969?

I guess, May is not a good month.

In Korea, May 18, 1980 is forever engraved in modern Korean history as the beginning of a fateful series of events. Its tragedy is relived on screen as director Kim Ji-hoon pays homage to the victims of the Gwangju Democratization Movement in his latest offering, "May 18." The film traces the suppression of a popular uprising that became a bloody 10-day conflict between soldiers and ordinary citizens. More...
