Holiday DVD 6: The Killer Inside Me (2010)

Based on the novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, Michael Winterbottom's "The Killer Inside Me" (2010) tells the story of a handsome, charming, unassuming small town sheriff's deputy, Lou Ford (Casey Affleck).

Lou has a bunch of problems - women problems, law enforcement problems, and an ever-growing pile of murder victims in his West Texas jurisdiction. And the fact he's a sadist, a psychopath, a killer. He has been able to repress his "sickness" since his childhood but an interaction with local prostitute Joyce Lakeland (Jessica Alba), reawakens the monster within.

Suspicion begins to fall on Lou, and it's only a matter of time before he runs out of alibis.

I find this movie very gratuitous, disturbing, and shockingly violent. Here's one of the best comments I found on IMDb that supports my verdict about this movie. "I didn't think Pulp Fiction was too violent; nor did I think that The Departed was too violent. However, and I say this with complete conviction, The Killer Inside Me is too violent. The moments of violence are relatively short but they're shown with such realism that it's nearly nauseating to watch. As a man I felt the duration and brutality of the violence against women to be borderline misogynistic. If the violence is not enough, the twist ending, which left a bitter taste in my mouth, seems to add more credence to the misogyny argument. I can't imagine a woman who will be able to enjoy this movie."

It's horribly disgusting to watch Jessica Alba (the prostitute, also Lou's lover) and Kate Hudson (Amy, Lou's girlfriend) being mistreated, kicked and punched into a bloody pulp. And it's a pity that their characters are there in the movie just to fill in the movie's sadistic lovemaking scenes. Overall, this movie is downright demeaning to women.

By the way, here's an article: "Jessica Alba leaves screening of 'The Killer Inside Me,' stirring outrage at Sundance over violence"

In summary, I would not recommend you to watch this movie. If you must, do watch it at your own risk.
