Ice Kacang Puppy Love is set in the 1980s in Tronoh, a small town in Perak and the story evolves between a shy boy, Botak (Ah Niu) and a feisty girl, Da Jia Yu/Fighting Fish (Angelica Lee).
In a nutshell, it's a simple, conventional yet emotional story of yesteryear - carefree childhood, memorable puppy love, heart-wrenching family problems, especially marital issues and parental pressures, and the yearning to leave home and venture into big cities.
Apart from its straightforward storyline and an impressive line-up of commendable Malaysia singers/stars, another aspect that worth mentioning is the perfect cinematography.
I'm truly mesmerized and surprised to watch shots after shots of picturesque and perfectly conceptualized scenes. Shot mostly in Perak and Penang, scenes of rural (kampung) and Chinese coffee shop lifestyle are perfectly captured, evoking memories and some tear-jerking moments. While watching, I've to ask myself a few times whether this really is a locally made movie. It's just too impossible! Kudos to Ah Niu for his directorial debut!
Highly recommended. You should catch it on DVD. :)
