Movie: Season of the Witch (2011)

Not all souls can be saved.

Season of the Witch (2011) is an action horror movie set in the 14th century.

Synopsis: In the 14th century, veteran Crusaders Behmen (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (Ron Perlman) return to Eastern Europe to find it stricken with a mysterious plague. The Church authorities accuse a young girl (Claire Foy) of witchcraft and as the source of the plague. They command the two knights to transport her to Selverac, a remote abbey where monks will perform a ritual on her to end the pestilence.

The party consists of the girl, Behmen and Felson, Priest Debelzaq (Stephen Campbell Moore), guide Hagamar (Stephen Graham), Knight Eckhart (Ulrich Thomsen), and a young priest-in-training, Kay (Robert Sheehan). Throughout the journey and upon the abbey, they find themselves struggling and fighting against an extremely ancient evil power and destructive force.

"Season of the Witch" has a simple. non-confusing plot. It's not a particularly remarkable movie but I'd say it's entertaining and watchable. Basically, it's a medieval movie with strong presence of good and evil forces. There are impressive action scenes that give you the jitters and grisly images of death-related beings and events. CGI effects are so-so but they give necessary support to the movie.

One more point, religion elements are strong but not in a way that make you feel too uneasy or repulsive, especially if you're a true believer of God, Christ, and the church. It's just a movie, there's no point in taking the movie plot too personally.

All in all, I'd say this is not a bad movie at all, although some say Nicolas Cage stars in crap movies nowadays. The combination of veteran and young stars do give pretty good vibe to the movie and their performance is not mediocre at all.

Therefore, "Season of the Witch" is definitely recommended as a must-watch movie. :)
