6 Tips to Advance in Work

This post is a summary I've written upon reading its original article: Six Reasons You're Not Advancing At Work.

1. Beef Up Your Negotiating Skills: Don't be shy when it comes to the matter of negotiating a fair salary for yourself.

2. Speak Up at Meetings: The first two to three people to speak during a meeting are seen as more self-confident and assertive.

3. Keep Your Message Short and On Point: Don't use too many words in an effort to soften your message, you'll end up diluting it or your line of thought will appear scattered.

4. Hone Your Leadership Skills: Have good problem-solving and people skills; know how to address an issue and tailor how to relate it to the audience; use power words like "we" instead of "I" when highlighting an issue is a good way to ease the defensive tendencies of others.

5. Say "No" When You Mean "No": Know when to say "no" to your superior. It may feel inappropriate and even self-injurious, but if you're asked to do something you can't do within the time frame or don't feel comfortable with, it's probably the way to go. Try to come up with alternatives instead if you're uncomfortable with saying "no" to your superiors or bosses.

6. Control Your Emotions: Crying on your job can be seriously damaging to your reputation and career because you'll be seen as weak or manipulative. Try to keep the tears to a minimum.
