Gerard Butler (King Leonidas in 300 & Mike Chadway in The Ugly Truth) is Kable in Gamer, an intense action thriller movie with this tagline: In the near future, you don't live to play... you'll play to live.
Despite its graphical extremity and intensity plus scores of Sodom & Gomorrah scenes, I've to admit that Gamer's storyline is brilliant. However, Gamer reminds me of another movie of the similar genre, Surrogates (starring Bruce Willis), which will be released in October 2009 in Malaysia.
Gamer is set in the near-future whereby mind-control technology is considered humane by mankind, globally. A multi-player online game called "Slayers" allows gamers to control human beings (real flesh & blood) in death combats! The justification is that these human beings are death row prisoners and that they "deserve" this "treatment". Any inmate who survives all 30 matches will win his freedom.
So, the whole movie is actually about Kable surviving the game's cruelty and his fighting for his freedom from the mind-control nanotechnology in order to be reunited with his wife and daughter.
It's a good movie with dramatic shots, no doubt. My problem is with its inhumane, cruel, inexplicably graphical, immoral, and lewd scenes that caused uneasiness and this unsettling feeling in my guts. That's all. :)
Watch it if you intend to give your conscience some rough rubs. :)
