Electrolux Washing-thon Collects Record 3,744 Kilograms of Used Clothes in Support of Community

Electrolux Home Appliances Malaysia goes an extra mile for charity by donating 8 units of Electrolux front-load washing machines and 12 units of Electrolux dryers to Grace Community Services.

Electrolux Washing-thon (www.facebook.com/ElectroluxMalaysia), the Malaysia 1st outdoor washing marathon in support of the community, closed on November 4, 2012 on a high note, having collected, washed and dried the record 3,744kg of clothes. For this enormous achievement, Electrolux Washing-thon was awarded a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) title for the "Largest Donation of Used Clothes in a Single Event".

These cleaned clothes will be distributed through Grace Community Services to 25 Orang Asli villages, 4 children homes, the homes for adults, the elderly and the destitute (Grace Home) and a centre for the drug-dependent by the year-end.

"I am so thrilled that all of us made Electrolux Washing-thon such a roaring success," said Mr. Koh Soh Hoie, General Manager of Electrolux Malaysia and Singapore. "Seeing how enthusiastic and generous Malaysians have been with volunteering their time and clothes, we decided to go an extra mile for charity, and being a leader in laundry solution, we have decided to donate 20 units of Electrolux front-load washing machines and dryers to Grace Community Services," he added.

Matching the contagious spirit of giving that was inspired by Electrolux Washing-thon, Unilever Malaysia committed to donate additional 810 packs of Persil low suds detergent, each weighing 500gm; 240 bottles of Comfort Ultra fabric softener in 800ml packaging and 480 bottles of Cif cream in 250ml packaging to Grace Community Services as well.

"I'd like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Electrolux Washing-thon for being certified as a national record holder. On behalf of the Malaysia Book of Records, I am pleased to welcome Electrolux Home Appliances Sdn Bhd and the sponsors of Electrolux Washing-thon to our family of high achievers," said Datuk Danny Ooi, Managing Director, MBOR. "Having successfully achieved the title of the "Largest Donation of Used Clothes in a Single Event" is a recognition of their achievement that places them amongst the 'Best of the Nation'."

(L-R): Datuk Danny Ooi, Managing Director, Malaysia Book of Records and Mr. Mr. Koh Soh, Hoi, General Manager, Electrolux Malaysia and Singapore with the Electrolux Home Appliances team that, through team work, pulled of the greatly successful Electrolux Washing-thon in support of the community.

Throughout 1st to the 4th of November, from 10am to 7pm, Electrolux Washing-thon was a fun-filled event for the volunteers and the public who were able to volunteer for the benefit of their community while having fun engaging in cooking demonstrations by Cilantro Culinary Academy and playing games to win cool prizes.

Electrolux Washing-thon Malaysia joins other initiatives by Electrolux around Asia that have collected and washed literally tens of thousands of clothes in charity and relief efforts in Indonesia, for the affected by typhoon "Ondoy" in Cebu, the Japan earthquake and flooding in Thailand.

"The generosity of everyone involved in Electrolux Washing-thon has gone beyond our wildest expectations," said Dr. Henry K. Pillai, Chairman of Grace Community Services.

"On behalf of all beneficiaries I would like to give the warmest thank you to Electrolux and the partners of Washing-thon, to the amazing volunteers and to the generous Malaysians who donated their clothes to those who have so little. I sincerely hope that other organizations will follow the example that Washing-thon has now established, because only together we can make a difference."

Electrolux Washing-thon as organized by Electrolux Appliances Malaysia and supported by partners including Citta Mall who donated the space, electricity and water to utilize for this biggest, most fun, outdoor laundry event Malaysia has ever seen; Unilever who armed the volunteers with litres of Persil laundry detergent and Comfort fabric softener and DB Schenker that took care of all transportation logistics by dedicating two trucks for the clothes pre-collection drive and the distribution of the clean clothes through Grace Community.
