Movie: Sword of War (2009)

Sword of War (2009) is a historical war movie set primarily in northern Italy when the Battle of Legnano was fought on 29 May 1176, between the forces of the Holy Roman Empire, led by emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and the Lombard League.

Synopsis: During the 12th century, German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (Rutger Hauer) triumphs over enemy lands to revitalize the once-great empire. But he must contend with Italian Alberto da Giussano (Raz Degan) and his "Company of Death", which is comprised of 900 angry men. They are all willing to fight to the death at the epic Battle of Legnano.

This movie is educational and entertaining as well. I learned about the Battle of Legnano that took place before the Crusades. Cinematography is pretty good and if you're a fan of epic wars like my sister, you'll enjoy watching the slo-mo battle scenes.

Some acting are rather stiff and not impressive. The cast's mother tongue is definitely not English, so you'll be listening to rather funny slang throughout the entire movie.

However, the main characters - the ambitious Emperor Barbarossa, the traitor Barozzi, and the courageous Alberto - are really good in their performance. The ladies give pretty impressive performance too - Alberto's wife Eleonora (Kasia Smutniak), Eleonora's sister Tessa (Federica Martinelli), and Barbarossa's Queen, Beatrice I, Countess of Burgundy (
Cécile Cassel).

Do catch it on DVD if you like to watch historical war movies.
