Flowers

I love flowers - sunflowers, roses, lilies, orchids, in fact, any kind of flowers. I miss receiving them. Then one day, my sister came home with a lovely pot (I don't know how to describe that arrangement) of flowers. I'm not sure what flowers are they, perhaps some daisies, forget-me-nots, and chrysanthemums. Lovely.

By the way, check out this link - Bacon Roses. I really think florists nowadays should do something awesome like this to boost sales, instead of charging crazy prices for flower bouquets with soft toys or chocolates or some other cute stuff. Hahaha!

I'm not sure what that title is all about but here's the test link. Gotten it from a fellow friend on Twitter.

Here's my diagnosis:

Odd. I'm not 100% sure what is it trying to tell me.

Movie: The Roommate (2011)

2,000 Colleges, 8 Million Roommates. Which One Will You Get?

The Roommate (2011) is a thriller movie.

Synopsis: ULA freshmen, Sara (Minka Kelly) and Rebecca (Leighton Meester) are roommates. Both become good friends but what Sara doesn't realize is that Rebecca is quickly becomes obsessed with her.

Rebecca despises Sara's other friends, including fellow dorm mate, Tracy (Alyson Michalka) and Sara's new boyfriend, Stephen (Cam Gigandet). Rebecca wants Sara all to herself and soon, her obsession turns really creepy and dangerous, even murderous.

This movie receives negative remarks in general. To be honest, I agree with them. There's absolutely nothing new or original in this movie. From the very beginning, you're already aware who's the "bad girl" and who are the victims. Every pace is predictable and not exactly exciting.

The saving grace comes at the last 15 minutes of the movie - the struggling scene between Sara and Rebecca. That's when you can see some blood and action.

Well, this is just a decent not-so-thrilling thriller. I'd say it's good enough just to watch it on DVD.

The Royal Spa Treatment @ Jari Spa, Solaris Dutamas

Tagline

Healing Technique. Indigenous Traditions. Release Stress and Pamper Yourself with Us.

Spa Coupon

Two months ago, I bought a spa coupon from Jari Spa for our Valentine's treat. After calling up Jari Spa to make an appointment, the only available slot for couples was on 22 April 2011. Well, it was a little bit belated for Valentine's Day but we still went ahead with our spa treatment escapade. :P

Jari Spa

A2-U1-5, Solaris Dutamas

10am - 8pm (Mon - Sun)
Website | Facebook | Twitter

Here's an introduction from their website: "Nestled in the middle of prestigious area in the city, the natural and authentic Balinese rituals are formed and await you in the setting of JARI. JARI means finger in the Malay language. Fingers that will sooth you, awake you, invigorate you to the whole new experience. JARI is a true sanctuary of tranquility that promises you the best in relaxation, a most rewarding experience with a true sense of inner-self, well-being, and beauty ensuring results and benefits."

This is the elegantly and artfully decorated walkway that leads the customers to their respective spa rooms. Soothing and relaxing Balinese music plays softly in the background.

This is another angle of the walkway.

Treatments

There are a few series of treatment offered by Jari Spa: The Body Senses, The Body Elements, The Beauty Senses Touch, The Body Amazing Rituals Spa, The Beautiful Bridal, Post Natal, and The Signature Rituals Spa. More info on their website.

The coupon that I bought was for The Royal Spa Treatment (in
The Body Amazing Rituals Spa series), originally priced at RM280 per pax for 2 hours. Treatment includes (in sequence) Foot Bath, Herbal Steam, Body Massage, Javanese Lulur, Whitening Mask, and Milk Bath.

First of all, we had our Foot Bath for five minutes.

Then, we went into this shower room attached in the spa room for Herbal Steam. The five minutes spent in that "oven" of 36-37 degrees Celsius was quite unbearable for me.

For the next 1.5 hours, we were given Body Massage (whole body), Javanese Lulur (scrub), and Whitening Mask (whole body). It was indeed a relaxing experience. The kneading and rolling loosened up unwanted knots in our muscles and pent-up stress from all-day's work.

Finally, we went into the shower room again for our Milk Bath. The bath tub functioned like a jacuzzi and we were being massaged by spurts of warm, milky water.

Before we left, we were given gift vouchers. :)

Good News!

Enjoy Aromatherapy Massage / Balinese Massage for RM89/hour OR Body Scrub and Body Mask at RM79 during Happy Hour (11am - 3pm). Also, take note of the Ladies Hour, every Friday 12-2pm.

I'd love to come for treatment again! :)

Discovering & Taking Action

I attended a meetup about how to deal with procrastination and getting things done in our life on Friday.

The speaker, Uncle Patrick was right when he commented about this meetup being a way to help us discover our situation. Then it's up to us on how we want to act upon our discovery.

Pre-discovery stage

Currently, everything is fine and dandy in my life. I'm pretty safe and sound in my comfort zone while doing things within my skill sets and confidence level. However, there's a problem - procrastination in terms of starting and doing new things that I know will do me good but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Meetup

The meetup basically caused us to understand what is procrastination, why do we procrastinate and how can we deal with it. We're all guilty of being procrastinators in one way or another.

What is procrastination?

Procrastination is avoiding doing things that need to be done or leaving things undone for as long as possible.

Why do we procrastinate?

Three main reasons:

  • Fear of facing failures.
  • Perfectionist.
  • Waiting or hoping that things will turn out to be done on their own.

Post-discovery stage

We really need our butts kicked so that we will wake up and start to do the things that we need or want to do. There's this one quote from Uncle Patrick that I think is really true: "How you do anything is how you do everything."

So, what we need to do is not about reminding ourselves not to procrastinate. That doesn't help because you can keep on telling yourself a thousand times that you must not procrastinate but in the end, nothing still gets done.

One way to kick out butts is to attend meet-ups with like-minded people so that we can share our experiences and thoughts and receive feel-good, positive reinforcements that will help to spur us ahead in taking action to get things done.

So here's the gist of what I've discovered:

1. Re-visit my dreams.
2. Set goals and tasks to achieve my dreams.
3. Set timelines for each tasks needed to achieve my dreams.

The main thing is MAKE THE DECISION TO TAKE ACTION NOW!

I've a list of things that I want to do and dreams that I want to achieve. Now it's time to get into planning mode. ;)

Movie: Red Riding Hood (2011)

Believe the legend. Beware the wolf.

Red Riding Hood (2011) is a dark fantasy movie loosely based on the folk tale Little Red Riding Hood.

Synopsis from IMDb: Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a young woman living in a small village whose parents have arranged for her to marry Henry (Max Irons), the successful village blacksmith. However, Valerie grew up with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), and she has been in love with him most of her life. They are planning on running away together, when her sister is killed by the wolf that has been terrorizing the village.

For many years, the wolf has not attacked the village people as long as they provide him food on a full moon. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has now killed a human. The villagers have had enough of this wolf, and they band together to hunt him down and kill it. They are not successful, so they call in Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), because this is no ordinary wolf. Father Solomon warns the people that this wolf takes human form by day, and the wolf could be one of them.

If you like urban fantasy for teens such as Twilight, then you will enjoy watching this movie. Having said that, let's take a look at the summary of the critics' reception as compiled by Wikipedia and you will get what I mean.

"It's a foolish story, marred by a strange blend of overacting and bland, offhand performances."
My comment: For goodness sake, why did Gary Oldman agree to star in this movie as that superfluous priest?

"A movie that cross-pollinates the Twilight formula with a werewolf and a girl who always wears a red hooded cape, although I don't recall her doing any riding."
My comment: Seriously, if you're one of the Twilight and Beastly haters, don't watch this movie.

"If the classics of world literature crying out to be filmed as a sexual fantasy for teenage girls, surely 'Red Riding Hood' is far down on the list."
My comment: Amanda Seyfried is gorgeous and sexy. That's it.

To watch or not to watch, you make your own choice. It's definitely not recommended by myself.

Mm-cafe

MM Cafe is Mastermind Cafe, located at AG-1, Ground Floor, Block A, Happy Mansion, Jalan 17/13, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. I love their tagline - Where Great Ideas Are Born - this serves as a positive reinforcement.

I attended a meetup at this cafe on Friday. It was about dealing with procrastination and getting things done in our life. I will blog more about the talk soon, hopefully by end of this Sunday.

Moving forward, I really feel this way: "It's sweet to set goals in your life and create tasks to achieve them persistently. Just do it! Positive reinforcement helps to propel us forward."

Lovelybones

I've watched the highly recommended movie, The Lovely Bones last year and I've even bought the book not long after I've watched the movie. This year, I'm reading the novel.

I've read Alice Sebold's Lucky and The Almost Moon too.

My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer.

This is Susie Salmon, speaking to us from heaven, It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. There are counselors to help newcomers to adjust, and friends to room with. Everything she wants appears as soon as she thinks of it - except the thing she wants most: to be back with the people she loved on Earth.

From heaven, Susie watches. She sees her happy suburban family implode after her death, as each member tries to come to terms with the terrible loss. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet.

The Lovely Bones is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting. It is, above all, a novel which finds light in the darkest of places, and shows how even when that light seems to be utterly extinguished, it is still there, waiting to be rekindled.

4321 Personal Financial Planning

End of last year, I blogged about this: Money, money, money

The gist of the post was pretty simple: I was frustrated because I realize the need to make and save more money is imminent.

Personal Financial Planning

A few days ago, I met up with a gal friend and she shared with me about personal financial planning. Basically, the very aim of personal financial planning is to generate income, create future cash reserves and other assets, and meet daily expenses.

Income & Expenses

The main bulk/source of your income should come from the salary you receive from your job monthly. However, if you also have part-time jobs and/or other means of passive income such as investments, these are also qualified as your sources of income. This is known as multiple sources of income.

There are two different kinds of expenses - fixed expenses and variable expenses. Fixed expenses include car loan, house loan/rental fees, any outstanding loans, e.g. study loan. Variable expenses include food, clothes, utility bills, petrol, beauty, health, and fitness, etc.

4321 Personal Financial Planning

The 4321 personal financial planning practice that my friend shared with me is interesting.

Use your nett salary amount for calculation, which is the amount you receive after EPF and PCB (income tax) figures are deducted from your gross salary.

4 = 40%: Fixed expenses. This includes house loan, car loan, study loan, send money for family.

3 = 30%: Variable expenses. This includes food, clothes, mobile fees, utility bills, movies, fitness, beauty saloon, petrol, credit cards payment.

2 = 20%: Savings / Emergency fund. This is to meet unexpected expenses such as car repair and also for future obligations.

1 = 10%: Insurance policies. Life and medical. Make sure that you're not under-insured.

I guess it'd be wise for me to do a recalculation to my current financial planning practice.

Movie: Limitless (2011)

What if a pill could make you rich and powerful?

Limitless (2011) is an action-thriller about a writer who takes an experimental drug that allows him to use 100% of his mind based on the novel The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn.

Synopsis from IMDb: Out-of-work writer Eddie Morra's (Bradley Cooper) rejection by girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) confirms his belief that he has zero future. That all vanishes the day an old friend introduces Eddie to NZT, a designer pharmaceutical that makes him laser focused and more confident than any man alive.

Now on an NZT-fueled odyssey, everything Eddie's read, heard or seen is instantly organized and available to him. As the former nobody rises to the top of the financial world, he draws the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro), who sees this enhanced version of Eddie as the tool to make billions. But brutal side effects jeopardize his meteoric ascent. With a dwindling stash and hit men who will eliminate him to get the NZT...

And here's a good sum-it-all comment from Wikipedia: "What makes the film so entertaining is its willingness to go far out, with transgressive touches and mind-bending images that take zoom and fish-eye shots to a new technical level, as the pill enables Eddie to experience astonishing new degrees of clarity, perception and energy."

Overall, I'd say this is an interesting movie with a very entertaining premise. It makes us think. Like it or not, everyone wants to be somebody. Now the question is, what would you do if you're given the chance?

One thing that I don't like
about this movie is its rather bold ending. This movie ends with the fact that the drug works so well it alters Eddie's brain chemistry to the point where he is practically superhuman. And, Eddie has no intention of stopping his rise to the top.

My point is, human beings should acknowledge the limitations or rather, the downsides of using such powerful drugs (if they do exist). On top of that, human beings shouldn't flaunt at how smart they can be, or worse, don't even have the courtesy to stop abusing them to achieve their own goals.

Well, putting aside humanity issues, this movie is recommended as food for thought.

Movie: Underdog Soldiers (2011)

Underdog Soldiers (2011) is an Australian movie based on a series of books written by Australian writer John Marsden, "Underdog Soldiers" (also known as "Tomorrow, When the War Began" in Australia & New Zealand).

Synopsis: Seven Australian teenage friends from a small town go on a camping trip. During the trip, they watch military fighter jets fly above them. Little did they know that their lives will soon be changed because their country is being invaded by an unexpected foreign military force. Upon returning home, they discover that they are at war. With whatever resources they could find, they come together as a team in order to save their country from being taken over entirely.

Ummm... I'm sorely disappointed because I've wasted almost 1.5 hours watching this movie, which turns out to be a teen flick. The only redeeming quality is the action scenes, especially when things get blow up. And also, I'm pretty impressed to see that the 'man' of the movie is an ass-kicking brunette who can operate petrol trucks and excavators as if they are toy cars.

Give this movie a go if you happen to like teen flicks. Urgh. With such an obvious open ending, there will be sequels soon. Let's hope the sequel or sequels will feature more of the teens kicking more asses and less jabbering and bullshitting.

Pain Management (Part II) - Headache Types

My previous post in this series is Pain Management (Part I) - Menstrual Pain (Dysmenorrhea).

Source: Guardian Pharmacy Leaflet

1. Tension-type Headaches

Tension-type headaches are the most common, affecting about 75% of all headache sufferers. They're caused by muscle tension in the neck, shoulders or head resulting from bad posture, social or psychological stress or fatigue.

As many as 90% of adults have had a tension-type headache. Some people get tension-type (and migraine) headaches in response to stressful events or a hectic day.

Pain is mild to moderate, constant band-like pain, pressure or throbbing and affects the front, top or sides of the head. Pain may last from 30 minutes to several days. Other symptoms include headache upon awakening, chronic fatigue, irritability, disturbed concentration, mild sensitivity to light or noise, and general muscle aching.

2. Rebound Headaches

Rebound headaches may occur among people with tension-type headaches as well as in those with migraines.

It appears to be the result of taking prescription or non-prescription pain relievers daily ir almost every day, contrary to directions on the package label. If prescription or non-prescription pain relievers are overused, the headache may "rebound" as the last dose wears off, leading one to take more and more pills.

3. Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are relatively rare, affecting about 1% of headache sufferers. They are distinct from migraine and tension-type headaches. Most cluster headache sufferers are male - about 85%.

Attacks occur episodically in groups (between periods of no headaches) and last for 6-8 weeks. A history of heavy smoking and drinking is common, and alcohol often triggers attacks.

4. Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are less common than tension-type headaches. As many as 6% of all men and up to 18% of all women (about 12% of the population as a whole) experience a migraine headache at some time. Roughly three out of four migraine sufferers are female.

Among the most distinguishing features is the potential disability accompanying the headache pain of a migraine. An aura - a group of tell-tale neurological symptoms sometimes occurs before the head pain begins. Typically, an aura involves a disturbance in vision that may consist of brightly colored or blinking lights in a pattern that moves across the field of vision. About one in five migraine sufferers experiences an aura.

Usually, migraine attacks are occasional, or sometimes as often as once or twice a week, but not daily.

Movie: Rio (2011)

This turkey can't fly

Rio (2011) is a musical animated movie from the creators of Ice Age.

Synopsis: A young macaw, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network), was kidnapped by poachers but luckily, he was adopted by a loving owner, Linda (Leslie Mann). 15 years later, Linda owns a bookstore in Minnesota and Blu stays by her side as her companion.

One day, a Brazilian ornithologist,
Túlio (Rodrigo Santoro) finds Linda and tells her that Blu is the last male of his species. He wants to take them to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil so that he could breed Blu with Jewel (Anne Hathaway), another female macaw in captivity.

Things don't turn out to be good when poachers steal both macaws. Blu and Jewel have to try their best to escape while avoiding being captured by the poachers and their insane cockatoo
Nigel (Jemaine Clement).

Consensus from movie critics: "This straightforward movie hits great heights thanks to its colorful visual palette, catchy music, and perfect vocal performances." This sentence pretty much sums up the entire movie.

What I enjoy the most is the abundance of life and energy, vibrant colors and sentiments, and catchy songs projected from this movie. Awesome!

Take a look at some video clips:

The first song in the movie: Real in Rio

The insane cockatoo's song: Pretty Bird (Nigel's Song)

The bird-dancing song: Hot Wings

Highly recommended. Go watch it. :)

Pain Management (Part I) - Menstrual Pain (Dysmenorrhea)

The discomfort associated with menstrual pain (also known as dysmenorrhea) range from cramps in the lower abdomen, diarrhea and frequent urination to sweating, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Mood swings, head and back aches, and upper thigh and back pain are also not unusual.

Source: Menstrual Cramps

What causes menstrual cramps?

1. Each month, the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) builds up in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, no pregnancy will result and the current lining of the uterus is no longer needed.

2. The woman's estrogen and progesterone hormone levels decline, and the lining of the uterus becomes swollen and is eventually shed as the menstrual flow and is replaced by a new lining in the next monthly cycle.

3. When the old uterine lining begins to break down, molecular compounds called prostaglandins are released. These compounds cause the muscles of the uterus to contract.

4. When the uterine muscles contract, they constrict the blood supply (vasoconstriction) to the endometrium. This contraction blocks the delivery of oxygen to the tissue of the endometrium which, in turn, breaks down and dies.

5. After the death of this tissue, the uterine contractions literally squeeze the old endometrial tissue through the cervix and out of the body by way of the vagina.

6. Other substances known as leukotrienes, which are chemicals that play a role in the inflammatory response, are also elevated at this time and may be related to the development of menstrual cramps.

Why are some cramps so painful?

1. Menstrual cramps are caused by the uterine contractions that occur in response to prostaglandins and other chemicals. The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining of the uterus pass through the cervix, especially if a woman's cervical canal is narrow.

2. The difference between menstrual cramps that are more painful and those that are less painful may be related to a woman's prostaglandin levels. Women with menstrual cramps have elevated levels of prostaglandins in the endometrium (uterine lining) when compared with women who do not experience cramps.

3. Menstrual cramps are very similar to those a pregnant woman experiences when she is given prostaglandin as a medication to induce labor.

Source: Guardian Pharmacy Leaflet

Two Types of Dysmenorrhea

Primary dysmenorrhea: Typically occurs in adolescents and usually begins 2 to 3 years following the first period. The cramps begin just before the onset of bleeding and usually stop within 2 or 3 days. They may persist throughout your 20s or until you deliver a child, after which, for unknown reasons, they're likely to decrease in intensity or go away entirely.

Secondary dysmenorrhea: Occurs mainly in women in their 30s or 40s and is attributed to some underlying causes such as endometriosis, fibroid or pelvic inflammatory disease. It can often be distinguished from primary dysmenorrhea by the fact that the pain usually continues for the duration of bleeding.

Relief for Cramps

1. Analgesics: If your cramps are too painful to ignore, try paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as ibuprofen and mefenamic acid. Such medications work best when taken before and during your period.

2. Nutritional supplements: Some women find that nutritional supplements such as evening primrose oil, magnesium, calcium or Vitamins B6 help relieve their pain.

3. Exercise: It reduces discomfort.

4. Apply some heat: Warmth can often soothe cramps. Take a long, hot bath or place a hot water bottle or heating pad on your stomach.

5. Gently massage your lower abdomen.

6. Go easy on coffee: Taking in less caffeine does help some women feel better.

7. Get enough sleep: Dealing with discomfort is a lot easier when you're not tired and cranky.

I've blogged about remedies for menstrual cramps here. Here's the list of articles that I've compiled about menstrual cramps.

Interesting, right?

Anyway guys, here are some words of wisdom. Love your woman and try to understand that she has to go through some sort of discomfort EVERY month for a period that lasts up to 4 or 5 days.

Your understanding and support mean a lot to her, provided that she also does her part to find relief solutions that suit her best. :)

It's "nanoblock" Time!

David bought back a packet of "nanoblock" from Singapore. They look like really tiny Lego blocks.

Time to build the "nanoblock" ducks!

"nanoblock" is an extremely small building block. The smallest part is a mere 4x4x5mm! These amazingly small micro sized block makes it possible to create more detailed and even smaller projects than what can be made with standard sized blocks.

"nanoblock" is a stimulating and entertaining hobby material for everybody, especially for grown-ups.

That's indeed true! David and I spent about 1.5 hours to create the following projects and had a good laugh at some of our creations. :P

The photo above shows two ducks created as per the instruction manual.

Since there were leftover blocks, David created a cute chicken-looking bird, the one with a short orange beak and tail.

Cute, right?

Having played with Lego since young, David decided to be a little bit more adventurously creative and innovative. So, he created an ostrich too! This was the one that made us laughed like crazy!

I'm glad we can spend time doing impromptu stuff like this and laugh together all the time. That's really nice. :)
